Track teams take to Burn, Mitchell meets

MITCHELL, Neb. – The area track teams had to wait out the weekend before getting in their meets.

After Saturday’s Burns Invite was postponed due to cooler and wet weather, all three teams made their way south on Monday. The next day, Lingle-Fort Laramie also traveled to Mitchell to take part in the Mitchell Invite which was originally scheduled for April 6.

(Editors note: After the sports pages had been sent to press on Thursday, the Telegram learned Slade Hopkins and Louden Bremer broke schools at the meets this week. On Monday, Hopkins broke the 400-meter dash record in 49.11 seconds, while Bremer broke the 300-meter hurdle record in 40.54 seconds on Tuesday in Mitchell.)

On Monday, the Lady Doggers finished sixth as a team with 63 points, while the boys’ team fifth with 65 points.

LFL picked up five wins on the day. Sophomore Louden Bremer scored two, while freshman Sully Wilson, senior Boyd Oliver and senior Emma Walker also had wins.

Bremer swept the hurdle events, winning the 110-hurdle race in 17.27 seconds and winning the 300 in 42.61 seconds. Wilson won the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 00.31 seconds, while Oliver won discus with a toss of 139 feet, 11 inches.

In the girls’ division, Walker picked up the team’s lone win in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.81 seconds.

The Dogger boys also had a pair of runner-up finishes. Senior Slade Hopkins finished second in the 400-meter dash in 49.11 seconds, while sophomore Brody Roberts was second in the 800-meter run in 2:08.24.

The Lady Doggers also had multiple runner-up finishes. Senior Maddy Saul placed second in the 200-meter dash in 27.74 seconds, while 4x400 relay team of Walker, Jada Kaufman, Jordynn Speckner and Saul finished second in 4:17.78, while the sprint medley relay team of Grace Gibson, Kenzie Wilkins, Addie Teeters and Holly Leiseth placed second in 4:57.02.

The next day, the Doggers were the only Wyoming team at the Mitchell Invite.

The LFL boys added two more wins in Mitchell as Myles Wilson won the 1,600-meter, beating out brother Sully, who finished second. Meanwhile, the 4x800 team of Roberts, Brayden Poston, Sully Wilson and Myles Wilson made a last lap pass of Gering to pull out the win in 8:36.28.

Other top finishes from the boys’ team included Oliver, who finished second in discus, Wyatt Sylvester, who placed fourth in pole vault, Louden Bremer, who finished third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 110 hurdles.

In the girls’ division, Kaufman led the Lady Doggers with a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles. She also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Skyla Wunder finished third in the long jump, while Avary Rising was third in shot put. Izzy Spears placed fourth in discus, while Saul came home fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Three relay teams placed for the Lady Doggers, including the 4x800 and 4x100 teams finished third, while the 4x400 team was fourth.

The Dogger boys ended the day fourth with 61 points, while the girls placed fifth with 53.

LFL is back in action Friday at the George Calvert Invite on Friday in Morrill, Nebraska. Action starts at 9 a.m.

Torrington

At Burns, the Lady Blazers finished second as a team with 129.5 points, while the Cheyenne East Lady Thunderbirds won the team title with 222 points. The Blazer boys finished fourth with 92 points.

In all, Torrington picked up 10 wins on the day with six of those coming in the girls’ division.

Freshman Brooklyn Asmus and senior Marissa Moorehouse led the way with two wins each.

Asmus won the 100-meter dash in 12.87 seconds, beating out teammates Alyssa Wondercheck, who finished third and Julie Le Nezet, who finished seventh. In the 200-meter dash, Asmus won in 25.92 seconds.

Moorehouse picked up wins the 400-meter dash in 1:00.51 and triple jump with a leap of 24-9.5.

The Lady Blazers also picked up a pair of relay wins. The 4x400 team of Asmus, Wondercheck, Trishell Pontarolo and Moorehouse won in 4:12.91, while the sprint medley relay team of Le Nezet, Natalie Hawes, Tiffany Krueger and Natalie Long won in 4:47.59.

The Torrington girls also had several finishes in the top three. Wondercheck and Moorehouse finished second and third in long jump, while Pontarolo placed third in triple jump. Long finished second in the 800-meter run, while the 4x100 team of Hawes, Le Nezet, Pontarolo and Wondercheck also placed second.

In the boys’ division, senior Aydan Loya picked up wins in the 800-meter run in 2:01.23 and in the 1,600-meter run in 5:08.45. Zab Munoz placed third in both of those races. Senior Brendan Flock and junior Ty Bennick also scored wins for the Blazer boys.

Flock won the 200-meter dash in 21.61 seconds and finished second in the 100-meter dash.

Meanwhile, Bennick paced a large group of Blazer throwers with a toss of 48-2.5 to win shot put. Trey Parriott was second at 44-11. Brayden Frazier finished fourth. 

In discus, Ryan Baker led the group with a second-place finish at 136-0.5, while Bennick was third and Frazier eighth.

Torrington heads to the Scottsbluff Twilight Invite. The meet was scheduled for Friday but has been moved to Saturday. Field events begin at 10 a.m., while running events fire off at 11:30 a.m.

Southeast

The Southeast track and field team also took part in the Burns Invite.

Seniors Dawson Mullock and Shelby Ekwall picked up the lone two wins of the day for the Cyclones.

Mullock won high jump, clearing 6 feet, while Ekwall won shot put with a throw of 43-6, beating out teammate Harper Boche, who finished second at 40-1.

Boche also placed second in the discus, while Ekwall was fifth and Kodi Andersen seventh.

In other top finishes, freshman Macy Tremain crossed the finish line in third in the 200-meter dash in 28.45 seconds, while freshman Kaycee Kosmicki was second in the 3,200-meter run in 13:16.49.

The Lady Cyclones also had two relay teams place in the top four. The sprint medley relay team of Kosmicki, Kennedi Blevins, Sasha Haines and Kylee Llewellyn came home third in 5:04.01, while the 4x100 team of Blevins, Tremain, Taylar Hansen and Haines placed fourth in 55.10 seconds.

In the boys’ division, the sprint medley relay team of Matthew Chapman, Mullock, Wyatt Campbell and Austin Short finished second in 4:09.44. Campbell also picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while the 4x800 relay team of Liam Haas, Lucas Gara, James Chapman and Dillion Hasbargen placed fourth in 10:51.31.

Short also placed fourth in the triple jump at 37-10.25, while Mullock was sixth in long jump at 19-5.75.

The Southeast girls finished fifth with 70, while the boys placed seventh with 41 points.

Southeast heads to the Pine Bluffs Invite on Friday.
