Torrington wrestlers sixth at Mitchell Invite

MITCHELL, Neb. – The Torrington High School wrestling team made the short drive east across state lines for the Mitchell Invite.

All five Blazers who participated in Saturday’s tournament placed no worse than fourth in their respective weight class.

Gabe Mitchell led the way with a second-place finish at 182 pounds. Mitchell pinned his way to the championship match before falling 8-7 to Morrill, Neb.’s Bryce Seier.

At 138 pounds, Matthew Hellus went 1-2 on the day finishing third. His lone win of the day came against Chance Carter of Leyton, Neb., by pin in Hellus’ final bout of the day.

Tyler Juma also ended the day in the win column, placing third at 170 pounds. Juma rebounded from an opening round loss to score two straight pins, including defeating teammate Sam Birdsall in the third-place match.

At 145 pounds, Kevin Ferguson also reached the third-place match but came up short in a 4-3 loss to Michael Rico of Gering, Neb.

The Blazers finished sixth as a team with 39 points. Mitchell won the team title with 128, while Hemingford, Neb. was second with 99.

Torrington travels to Rawlins on Saturday, Feb 8 for the final regular season tournament.
