TORRINGTON – With the return of an older baseball team to Torrington this year, the Legion A State Tournament heads back to Torrington again, with the dates set for Aug. 1-5 this summer.
Torrington put in a bid at the Legion December meetings. Casper was originally chosen to host the tournament, but they withdrew their bid, putting Torrington next in line. Kari Brafford, the Torrington Tigers Legion President, along with help from WyoPreps, estimated the last time Torrington hosted the state tournament was in 2002, so the organization is jumping back into the league with a bang.
Torrington did not have an older Tigers team for several years, but the numbers work out this year and they are able to field an older team, which will be comprised of last year’s 15-and-under roster. The older team this year will remain under the direction of manager Andy Brown.
“It is our first year in A for a while, Brafford said. “We’re deciding to play A and be as competitive as we can be.”
The Tigers have been put into the East District of the Legion A league, along with Cheyenne, Douglas and Wheatland. Coming out of the west is Cody, Powell, Lovell, Riverton, Casper and Evanston. The top four teams in each district will compete at the state tournament, and since there are only four teams currently in the East District, Torrington will be looking to defend its home diamond with an automatic spot in the state tournament.
“Torrington is going to be in the state tournament regardless,” Brafford said. “Of course, we want to get a good seed at districts, but we will be there no matter what.”
The district tournaments are on July 26-28, with the west vying for spots at the state tournament in Lovell and the east jostling for seeding for the state tournament in Wheatland.
This group of Tigers has experienced success over the last several years. In the 15-and-under division, Torrington has finished second in the state three years in a row. The now 17-and-under Tigers team will be facing tougher competition this year with the bump in divisions, but Torrington will still be looking to defend its home diamond on Aug. 1-5.
“We definitely feel we are prepared and ready,” Brafford said. “I really want to show that we are a community and we have a fan base. We are all just excited.”
