Torrington boys fifth at regionals

CHEYENNE – The Torrington tennis teams began postseason play over the weekend at the South Regional Tournament in Cheyenne.

As a team, the Blazer boys finished fifth with 22 points.

Torrington qualified all 16 players to the state tournament, which will be held in Gillette Thursday through Saturday.

In the boys’ division, Aidyn Saucedo, the No. 1 singles player, bounced back from an opening round loss to win the consolation bracket with three consecutive victories.

He defeated Cheyenne Central’s Isaiah Rigg 6-2, 7-6 after Rigg defeated Saucedo in the first round.

In the No. 2 single bracket, Issac Bartlett went 1-2. His lone win came in the first round of the consolation bracket, defeating Logan Davis of Cheyenne East, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.

In doubles action, the team of Cody Clayton and Gabe Russell won their opening round match to advance to the semifinals of the No. 1 doubles bracket. They defeated Rawlins 6-4, 6-3. They lost two straight matches after the win, falling to Green River and Cheyenne South.

In No. 2 doubles, Adam Bartlett and Ben Firminhac went 2-2, falling in the consolation bracket final. After losing to Cheyenne South in the opening round, the Torrington duo scored wins over Cheyenne East 6-1, 6-2 and Cheyenne Central 6-4, 7-6 before falling to Cheyenne South for a second time in the consolation bracket finale.

In the No. 3 doubles bracket, the team of Jorey Asmus and Remington Bremmer went 0-2, losing to Laramie and Rock Springs.

Green River won the team title with 53 points, while Laramie was second with 47.

In the girls’ division, No. 1 singles player Bethany Wunibald went 0-2, losing to Lina Woelk of Laramie 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and to Kristen Anderson of Rawlins 7-5, 6-0.

In the No. 2 singles bracket, Jaycee Shields went 1-2. Her lone win came over Lexie Taylor of Cheyenne South 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the consolation bracket.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Kayla Watson and Kassidy Hurley went 0-2, falling to Laramie and Rawlins, while the No. 2 team of Julianna Russell and Katie Watson also went winless, falling to Cheyenne East and Rock Springs.

In the No. 3 bracket, sisters Shaelee and Reagan Jackson went 1-2, falling to Laramie and to Rock Springs in the semifinal of the consolation bracket following a default win.

The Lady Blazers scored five points, placing eighth as a team. Cheyenne East won the team title with 53 points, while Green River was second with 50.

The Wyoming State Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday at a number of locations around Gillette, including Campbell County High School, Thunder Basin High School and Bicentennial Park. Action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. all three days.
