WHEATLAND – The Torrington Tigers went 1-2 at the East District Tournament over the weekend to earn the No. 4 seed for this week’s American Legion ‘A’ State Tournament.

The Tigers opened districts with a win over Douglas but fell to Cheyenne and Wheatland to close out the round robin tournament.

Torrington 11, Douglas 9

On Thursday, the Tigers opened the district tournament with an 11-9 victory over the Douglas Cats.

With two quick outs in the top of the first inning, starting pitcher Cameron Murphy jumpstarted the Torrington offense with a two-out double.

Douglas then issued walks to Jared Myrtle and Bo Moorehouse before Daniel Wayland connected with a single to put the visitors on top 2-0.

Two innings later, Torrington exploded for six more runs, including three before the Cats could record an out.

It led to an 8-0 lead after three innings of play, but in the fourth, Douglas started its comeback.

Douglas plated four runs in the bottom of fourth inning and scored at least one run in each frame the remainder of the game, including three in the bottom of the seventh.

Gabe Mitchell and Nick Sherbeyn paced the offense attack for Torrington with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Wayland and Moorehouse also collected two hits apiece, combining to drive in five runs and score three times.

Murphy picked up the victory, pitching 4 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Cheyenne 14, Torrington 4

Torrington jumped out to early 2-0 lead, but the Hawks quickly responded with 13 straight runs en route to a 14-4 win.

The start of the Friday’s game was very similar to Thursday’s.

With two outs on the scoreboard, a two-out error and a walk led to a pair of Tiger runs when Moorehouse doubled to center field.

The lead was short-lived as the Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning before adding seven in the bottom of the second.

Heading to the fifth inning, Torrington needed to plate two to extend the game.

The Tigers got RBIs from Jackson Jones and Murphy to draw their team back within 13-4.

However, it only took Cheyenne three batters to extend its lead back to 10, ending the game with no one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Torrington only managed four hits in the loss – one each from Firminhac, Jones, Moorehouse and Sherbeyn.

Firminhac was tagged with the loss, surrendering six earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Wheatland 10, Torrington 3

Despite the loss on Friday, with Douglas’ win over Cheyenne on Saturday, it positioned the Tigers to have a shot at the No. 1 seed from the East District Tournament with a win over the Wheatland Lobos.

However, the hosts of the weekend tournament had other ideas.

The Lobos jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first inning and cruised to a 10-3 win over Torrington.

Torrington’s only offense came in the top of the third inning.

Consecutive singles from Firminhac, Jones and Murphy led to Torrington’s first run.

Moorehouse worked a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch cut the Tiger deficit in half to 6-3.

That proved as close as Torrington came to seeing the lead the remainder of the game.

Wheatland countered with two in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth.

Murphy and Myrtle tallied four of the team’s six hits, while Firminhac and Jones added the others.

Myrtle took the loss, striking out six over three innings of work.

The win clinched the No. 1 see for Wheatland, who finished the tournament with a 3-0 record, leaving Torrington, Douglas and Cheyenne needing a tie-breaker for the remaining seeds.

Cheyenne earned the No. 2 seed, while Douglas the three and Torrington four.
