‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams in action over the weekend

TORRINGTON – All three levels of the Torrington Tiger American Legion baseball team were in action over the weekend.

The ‘A’ team improved to 4-2 with a pair of wins over Chadron, Nebraska on Friday.

Despite being short-handed due to multiple team members attending the state track meet in Casper, the Tigers picked up 6-2 and 5-2 wins over Chadron.

In game one, a sacrifice fly by Ryder Hackbarth drove in Ayden Desmond to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first en route to a 6-2 victory.

Grady Shields and Ben Firminhac added runs in the third inning, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Chadron got two runs back in the top of the fifth, cutting the Torrington lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Desmond singled, driving in two runs, and a wild pitch pushed the Tiger lead to four.

Desmond and Firminhac paced the offense with two hits apiece. Mac Hibben picked up the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings, striking out eight.

In game two, Nolan Long went the distance again for the Tigers in a 5-2 victory.

Long struck out six, walked one and gave up three hits over seven innings.

Chadron grabbed the early lead in the top of the second, but Tiger newcomer Jonathan Bloom tied the game with a double, driving in Long.

In the third, Long doubled, putting the Tigers in front for good 2-1.

The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a triple by Firminhac and a single by Hibben.

Offensively, Firminhac collected two hits, while five others added one hit apiece.

Tigers are back in action against the Rawlins Generals on Friday, May 26. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Tiger 'B' team opens season with win

The Tiger ‘B’ team opened the 2023 season with a 12-4 win over Rawlins on Saturday.

Rawlins jumped on the Tigers early with two runs in the top of the first, but a double by Colby Sandusky, drove in Holden Hackett and Anthony Moser to tie the game at two in the bottom fo the first.

The Torrington offense exploded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, adding one more in the fifth and seventh innings. In the eighth, Torrington added three more runs to end the game.

Wyler Fisher, Hackett and Moser had two hits apiece in the game. Sandusky drove in three runs, while Hackett and Ryan Moorehouse had two RBIs each.

Moorehouse, Hackett and Fisher combined to strike out 17 Rawlins batters, including eight from Moorehouse.

The Tiger ‘B’ team is back in action at home on Thursday, May 25 vs. Chadron, Nebraska. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Tiger 'C' team splits with Douglas

The Torrington Tiger ‘C’ also opened the season on Saturday.

In game one, the Tiges picked up a 3-0 victory.

All three runs came in the fifth inning.

A groundout by James Stienmetz drove in the game’s first run, and Garrett Hager singled, driving in Paxtyn Rude. The next batter, Harrison Rodriguez, doubled to left field, scoring Hager.

Torrington tallied only three hits for the game – Skyler Patrick got the other.

Will Rodgers and Taven Reimers combined for the four-hit shutout. The duo struck out a combined six Douglas batters.

In game two, the Tigers fell 6-5 to Douglas.

Torrington grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning before Douglas scored six straight runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tiger rally came up one run short.

Rodgers grounded out for the first out of the inning but drove in Rhett Clark in the process. Two batters later, Hager singled, cutting the Douglas lead to 6-4. The next batter, Rodriguez drove in the game’s final run on a double.

Five Torrington batters collected one hit each in the loss.

Hager and Clark teamed up to strike out seven Douglas batters.

Torrington ‘C’ is back in action on Saturday against Gillette at 10 a.m. and Green River at 3 p.m. on Saturday, at the Douglas Tournament.
