Torrington Trailblazers Jacob Wamboldt and Tristen Kingsley both made it to the state title match, but fell short, bringing home two silvers from the 3A State Tournament over the weekend in Casper.

THS’ Wamboldt, Kingsley runners-up at state tourney

CASPER – Torrington Trailblazers Jacob Wamboldt and Tristen Kingsley both made it to the state title match, but fell short, bringing home two silvers from the 3A State Tournament over the weekend in Casper.

Heavyweight Wamboldt kicked off his weekend by pinning Rawlins’ Domingo Acosta at the 1:11-mark. Wamboldt picked up another pin over Eric Flores (Cody) in the second period, before going the distance against Powell’s Brandon Thompson, winning in a 4-2 decision. In the championship match, Wamboldt was pinned late in the third period by Worland’s Morgan Tigner, finishing second.

At 138 pounds, Kingsley spent a lot of time on the mats over the weekend. After starting the weekend by pinning Jeffery VanAntwerp (Thermopolis) in the second period, the Blazer had three matches go the distance. He beat Riverton’s Treytan Hyatt by a 9-4 decision, before beating Cody’s Jon Sanchez by a 6-2 decision. In the championship match, Kingsley fell behind 5-0 against Reese Karst (Powell). He scored two one a takedown and was working toward more points, but ran out of time, falling 5-2.

A pair of Blazers in Quentin Meyer (120) and Jacob Polkowske (145) both finished fifth in their weight class.

Meyer started by winning an 8-5 decision over Michael Maddox (Powell), followed by an 11-3 decision win over Douglas’ Charlie Koss. Newcastle’s Kale Corley got the better of Meyer in the semi-final, pinning him in the first period.

After dropping to the consolation semi-finals, Meyer lost in an 8-1 decision against Star Valley’s Tristan Hicks, putting the Blazer in the fifth-place match, where he won by a 9-6 decision over Andrew Sandoval (Cody).

Polkowske picked up a forfeit win over Liam O’Hara (Cody) to kick off the weekend, before losing in a 7-2 decision against Star Valley’s Trevor Clark.

In the lower bracket, Polkowske rattled off two wins, pinning Cole Davis (Powell) in the third period and beating Koy Meyers (Thermopolis) by a 7-3 decision. In the consolation semi’s, the Blazer lost in an 8-6 decision against Newcastle’s Alan Baker. Polkowske got back on the winning track in the fifth-place match, winning by an 11-2 major decision over Lander’s Jack Sweeney.

At 152 pounds, Casey Britton picked up two wins after losing his first match by pin in the second against Rawlins’ Robert Flores. In the wrestle-backs, Britton pinned Jace Skovgard (Buffalo) and Greyson Hunsaker (Star Valley) in the second period, before being pinned at the 1:20-mark by Cody’s Orin Oilar.

Josh Kingsley (170) was the other Blazer to record two wins at the state tournament. He started with a pin in 39 seconds against Mountain View’s Trever Condos, before falling by pin in the second against William Atnip (Lander). Kingsley returned to his winning ways by pinning Bridger Harris (Mountain View) in the third period. Kingsley’s weekend came to an end with a loss via pin in the second period against Douglas’ Dylon Case.

Nycholas Melchor, a 106-pounder, was one of six Blazers to finish the weekend with a 1-2 record. The freshman started with a pin in the third period against Worland’s Kein Anderson, before two matches that went the distance. Melchor lost by a 4-2 decision against Keegan Gehlhausen (Pinedale) and a 1-0 decision against Keegan Meyer (Wheatland).

At 126 pounds, Pake Haun started with a 14-0 major decision loss against Douglas’ Kadin Matthews, before pinning Rawlins’ Erik Miller in 43 seconds. In the second round of wrestle-backs, Haun lost in an 8-2 decision against Kagan Lenzen (Douglas).

Senior Chase Dominguez took the mats at 160 pounds for Torrington, starting his weekend with an 11-3 major decision loss against Lyman’s Colton VanGieson. In the lower bracket, Dominguez went the distance against Tristan Mikesell (Rawlins), winning by a 6-3 decision, before being pinned in the second period against Dax Read (Douglas).

Jakob Brott, a 182-pounder, fell in his first match by pin in the second period against Brennan Harris (Star Valley), before recording a pin in 43 seconds over Jaylon Martinez (Douglas). Brott suffered his second loss against Morgan Felbeck (Buffalo), a pin in the third period.

Freshman Riley Grubbs started his first state tournament hot, recording a pin in 47 seconds over Teagan Curl (Riverton). Grubbs then lost by pin in the first against Lyman’s Dryden Menck and pin in the third against Powell’s Matthew Seckman.

Brandon Bennick (220) was the final Blazer to pick up a win at the state tournament, although his weekend started with a loss via pin in the second period against Kolby Carson (Pinedale). Bennick picked up a win in the lower bracket by pinning Gabe Nelid (Star Valley) in the third period, before falling by pin in the second against Rawlins’ Cutter Foster.

Riley Duffield took the mats at 106 pounds. He started his weekend by falling by fall against Cody’s Drew Morris, followed by a pin loss in the second period against Wheatland’s Meyer.

Nicholas Sherbeyn (132) fell in his opening match by pin in the first period against Douglas’ Cayden Dowse. The Blazer then lost in the second period against Worland’s Tristen Lungren.

At 160 pounds, Tyler Juma competed for Torrington, falling by pin in both of his matches, falling to Koa DeLong (Star Valley) and Nick Wilson (Pinedale).

Ryan Walson (182) rounded out the Torrington wrestlers competing in Casper. He was pinned late in the second period against Cody’s Charlie Beaudrie. Against Rawlins’ Weston Bezold, Walson lost in a 6-0 decision.

The Blazers racked up 97 team points to finish ninth, ahead of Pinedale’s 85.5 points. The Blazers improved on their 11th-place finish from a year ago. Star Valley took the top team spot with 267 points, followed by Cody’s 164 points and Worland’s 153 points.
