THS students build new donation box for Waggin’ Tails

TORRINGTON – The brand-new donation box at Waggin’ Tails Shelter is not the only project kids from the Torrington High School woodshop class have been working on.

When the shelter reached out about a possible donation box, teacher Charles Richter was all too happy to guide the kids in making it. Richter has received and led the kids in making several items for different organizations in the community, including the box at Waggin’ Tails and their current project of refurbishing a wagon for St. Joseph’s Children’s Home.

“It’s kind of fun knowing that what you’re making is helping other people out,” THS junior Nolan Long said.

While the donation box for Waggin’ Tails only took about a week and a half to make, the kids have quite the journey ahead of them in restoring the wagon, a bigger project than they are usually asked to do.

“We’re just willing to help out and do whatever we can do to help our community,” Richter said. “It was asked, and we said okay. It helps us to keep the kids busy and give them a sense of community, too.”

The kids who helped make the box include Long, junior Kaden Miller, sophomore Adam Bartlett and sophomore Reece Grubbs.

“I like making stuff for people…and helping out,” Grubbs said about his favorite part of class.

Bartlett said he enjoys being able to serve his community and help out where they can.

Grubbs would also encourage local organizations to “hit us up” when in need of a little extra help restoring old wood items or creating entirely new ones.

The Waggin’ Tails Shelter is located on East 11th Avenue and the new donation box sits just out front. The shelter is always accepting donations of needed items such as Dawn dish soap, paper towels, Purina Dow Chow, Purina Puppy Chow, Clorox wipes and Purina Cat Chow. Call 307-532-5373 for more information regarding donations and most needed items. Cash donations can also be dropped off at the shelter or mailed to 436 E 22nd Avenue, Torrington WY 82240.
