TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School tennis teams began the 2018 season with a busy opening week.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams picked up a win to begin the season.

The Lady Trailblazers earned their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over the Rawlins Outlaws, defending their home court on Thursday.

No. 1 singles player Emi Glass defeated Selena Lunda 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 doubles team Tyne Stokes and Trisha Cates, along with No. 3 doubles team of Jaycee Myrtle and Autumn Harris also earned wins, giving the Lady Blazers the one-point victory.

In the boys’ division, Aidyn Saucedo defeated Jacob Pacheco 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) for Torrington’s only win in a 4-1 loss to Rawlins.

Two days later, the Blazers made the trip across the state to square off against Rock Springs and Green River.

“After a long road trip, I was proud of our kids going out and competing and getting better each time they get on the court,” THS coach Curtis Birkley said.

Against the Green River Wolves, Torrington combined for only one win.

The victory went to Lady Blazer’s No. 2 singles player Sera Glass.

Later that afternoon, the Torrington boys picked up a 3-2 win over the Rock Springs Tigers.

No. 1 singles player Brian Fenn won 6-0, 6-1.

“Brian Fenn did some great things this weekend getting more consistent with his groundstrokes and finding the open court,” Birkley said.

Meanwhile Gabe Russell picked up victory by default, while No. 1 doubles team of Levi Wickman and Saucedo won 7-5, 6-2 for the third win of the day.

In the girls’ division, Emi and Sera Glass got the only two wins of the match for Torrington.

“Sera Glass did a great job finishing points and staying consistent to win both of her matches,” Birkley said. “Emi Glass competed hard playing into 3 sets in both matches. She showed heart coming from behind to beat a very consistent Sasha Bentley from Rock Springs.”

The Blazers will be back in action on Thursday in a girls’ only doubleheader against Natrona County High School at 2 p.m. and Kelly Walsh at 4 p.m. On Saturday, both teams will back in action Saturday in Sheridan. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
