THS qualifies seven for state tourney

BUFFALO – The Torrington High School wrestling team will take seven wrestlers to this weekend’s state tournament in Casper.

Those seven wrestlers placed in the top eight at the Class 3A East Regional Tournament in Buffalo.

Leading the charge was Torrington junior Gabe Mitchell, who reached the championship match of the 182-pound bracket.

Mitchell tallied a pair of fall victories en route to the semifinal round, where he defeated Kyle Thurin of Burns-Pine Bluffs by a 9-4 decision.

In the championship match, Mitchell was pinned in the third period by Dawson Stinson of Douglas.

In the 220-pound bracket, Rhiley Grubbs reached the semifinal round before suffering his first loss of the weekend. Grubbs rebounded with a win in the consolation semifinal round to advance to the third-place match, where he suffered a medical forfeit loss.

Torrington senior Tyler Juma went 2-2 on the weekend to finish fifth at 160 pounds. Juma began and ended the weekend with losses, but picked up a pair of wins in the first two rounds of consolation side of the bracket.

Kevin Ferguson also went 2-2, placing sixth at 145 pounds.

He picked up a pair of fall victories in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket.

At 126 pounds, D.J. Mackey went 3-2 to finish seventh, while Michael Sandusky and Sam Birdsall finished eighth at 132 and 170 pounds, respectively.

Kyler Shields picked up a win for the Blazers but did not place.

The Class 3A Wyoming State Wrestling Championships begin Friday and conclude Saturday. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday and concludes at 7 p.m. with the semifinal matches. On Saturday, wrestle-back rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. and wraps up with the championships at 3:45 p.m.
