LANDER – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers picked up their first win of the season in their third of three games at the Lander Classic over the weekend, where they beat Riverton and fell to Lander and Cody.

Lander 63, Torrington 49

Taylor Walsh stepped up in the absence of fellow senior Logan Murphy, who missed the weekend with a concussion. Walsh accounted for 17 points, with six coming from behind the arc and another five from the charity stripe. She rounded out her stat line with two offensive boards, an assist and four steals.

“A lot of different girls had to step up and take over more of a role,” coach Jeff Halley said of the absence of Murphy. “We had some good moments in each game and some moments that we still need to learn from.”

A trio of seniors scored seven points apiece. Adia Sherbeyn knocked down a three-pointer on her way to seven points. Hailey Hashman and Chrissy Lira each had seven points on a combined 6-of-15 shooting. Hashman had six rebounds and two steals, while Lira added three boards and Sherbeyn kicked in three boards, an assist and a team-high five steals.

Brooklyn Tucker led the Lady Blazers on the boards with 10 rebounds, which she paired with an assist, four steals and three points. Brielle Bivens also kicked in three points, a rebound and a steal. Dani Masterson, Sam Hill and Renee Cline combined for five points and a rebound.

Torrington shot 25 percent from the floor and 20 percent from behind the arc.

“Against Lander, their size just killed us,” Halley said. “They had a big strong post and we had trouble slowing down. She pounded us for 31.”

Cody 65, Torrington 46

“We let their best athlete sneak behind us too many times,” Halley said. “We battled well with Cody, even had a one-point lead in the third, and then our shooting went south and our defense wore down.”

Walsh was again the top scorer for Torrington, pouring in 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. She also had three boards, an assist and two steals.

Tucker also knocked down a shot from behind the arc, tallying eight points and a rebound. Sherbeyn, Lira and Cline all had six points apiece. The trio combined for seven boards and an assist. Sherbeyn paced Torrington with four steals.

Bivens and Laura Halley rounded out the scoring, combining for six points and six rebounds, while Masterson kicked in another two boards.

Torrington upped its shooting percentage to 34 percent from the field, with a 42 percent conversion rate from behind the arc and 75 percent shooting percentage from the free-throw line.

Torrington 40, Riverton 31

The Lady Blazers closed out the weekend with their first win of the season by besting Riverton. Sherbeyn stepped into the leading scorer role for the Lady Blazers, tallying nine points. She also tied for second on the team with six boards, which she paired with an assist and two steals.

Hashman turned in seven points in the win on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor. The senior also paced the team on the boards with seven rebounds, along with a steal. Also on 3-of-6 shooting, Tucker recorded six points, three boards, an assist and two steals.

Lira and Walsh each had five points in the win. Lira chipped in six rebounds and a steal, while Walsh racked up seven steals, two rebounds and an assist. Bivens, Masterson and Halley combined for the remaining eight points, while combining for 12 rebounds and an assist.

“Against Riverton, we played better defense than in our first two games. We really got out on their shooters and did a much better job on the boards,” Halley said. “It was a good win for us, especially since they come here again this Thursday. They will make some adjustments, and we will have to as well.”

Torrington and Riverton have a rematch this Thursday at Willi Gymnasium, with the tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Blazers then head to Sidney, Neb. for a tournament on Dec. 28-30.

“We will work to improve on both our full-court pressure and our half-court game heading into the break and continue to improve heading into conference play in January,” Halley said.
