THS girls snag conference win

TORRINGTON – Aided by Taylor Walsh’s 13 points, the Torrington Lady Trailblazers defended their home floor Friday in a conference win over Newcastle, 40-29.

The Lady Blazers found themselves in a familiar position against the Lady Dogies earlier this season. In both games, Torrington was up by six points in the fourth quarter. In the first meeting, the Lady Dogies pushed the game to overtime, with the Lady Blazers escaping with a one-point victory.

“I was proud of our girls,” coach Jeff Halley said. “This time, we did a nice job of taking care of business and putting them away.”

Walsh shot 5-of-9 from inside the arc and knocked down one of the team’s two three-pointers. She finished the night with two rebounds, an assist and a team-high five steals.

Logan Murphy was two points shy of a double-double. She notched eight points, 10 rebounds, with six on offense, and three steals. Brooklyn Tucker and Hailey Hashman each kicked in five points, combining for 10 rebounds and two steals.

Adia Sherbeyn recorded four points, four boards, two assists and two steals. Laura Halley and Dani Masterson rounded out the scoring by combining for five points, two boards and an assist. Chrissy Lira, Renee Cline and Brielle Bivens combined for five rebounds and a steal.

The Lady Blazers were held to 29 percent from the floor (15-of-51) and 18 percent from behind the arc (2-of-11), but they did knock down 8-of-12 from the charity stripe in the win.

The Lady Blazers were limited to 22 percent shooting on their 36 shot attempts as their offense was stifled by the Lady Bearcats Thursday in a road conference loss.

“At Douglas on Thursday, it wasn’t a very fun night,” Halley said. “Good teams really can expose your mistakes, and we made too many mistakes to play with them long. They capitalized on our turnovers and it snowballed in a hurry.”

Walsh, Murphy and Sam Hill all had four points apiece on two made buckets. Murphy also tied for the team lead with six rebounds, while Walsh and Hill combined for three rebounds and an assist and two steals.

Rounding out the scoring, Sherbeyn, Masterson and Tucker combined for five points. Sherbeyn tallied six boards and an assist, with Masterson and Tucker combining for two boards and two steals.

With the dust settled at the end of the weekend, Torrington holds an 8-9 record on the year, with a 3-2 record in the quadrant. The Lady Blazers have the second seed locked up for the regional tournament with three games left on their schedule, starting with Senior Night on Friday against Wheatland with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Torrington also has a road game Saturday at 4 p.m. against Rawlins.

“There are some things that we need to correct and get better at, but I like the intensity that our girls are playing with right now,” Halley said. “When we play hard, we give ourselves a chance in any game.”
