DOUGLAS – The Lady Trailblazers faced two tough teams to close out the regular season, ending with two losses, but Torrington will be looking to turn around those fortunes this weekend at the 3A East Regional Tournament, with a berth to the state tournament on the line.
The Lady Blazers are coming into the postseason at 9-11, with back-to-back losses against Rawlins and Buffalo to close out the regular season. Before those two losses, Torrington was winners of four of their past five games.
As the second seed from the quadrant, Torrington’s first matchup was against Worland on Thursday after press time. The Lady Warriors are 8-11 on the year, with one of their losses coming against Torrington on Feb. 2, 39-32.
Depending on Thursday’s results, Torrington will face either Buffalo or Wheatland in the second round. Buffalo is the top seed from the west quadrant with an 18-5 record on the year. The Lady Blazers have faced the Lady Bison twice this winter, falling in both matchups. Against the Lady Bulldogs, who are 3-17 on the year, Torrington is 2-0, with both wins coming by more than 15 points.
Douglas is the top team in the other portion of the bracket with an unblemished 21-0 record. Torrington suffered two losses to the Lady Bearcats by wide margins this winter.
Rawlins, Newcastle and Thermopolis are the other three teams vying for a position at the state tournament. The Lady Outlaws finished the year at 12-9, including the recent win over the Lady Blazers. Newcastle sits at 5-13 on the year, while Thermopolis is 7-14. Torrington is 3-0 against the Lady Dogies and Lady Bobcats, besting Newcastle twice.
Torrington has shown the ability to string together some wins and it will need do the same this weekend. The Lady Blazers need to reverse some of their losses from earlier this season in order to punch their ticket for the state tournament.
