TORRINGTON – A huge first quarter by Mitchell, Neb. on Thursday in Torrington proved to be the different, with the Torrington Lady Trailblazers sitting in an unrecoverable hole early in the contest.

Mitchell stormed out to a 7-2 lead after converting on their first three possessions a minute and a half into the contest. Torrington’s offense was stifled in the first quarter, as the Lady Blazers faced a 24-5 deficit after the first eight minutes of action.

“I was happy with how we handled their pressure early in the game, but we got sloppy with the ball in the half court and gave up too many good looks on defense and they made their run,” coach Jeff Halley said.

By halftime, the Lady Tigers expanded their lead to 43-9.

“In the second quarter, their defensive intensity got to us and we got tired and lazy on our own defensive end and let them pull away,” Halley said.

Returning to the floor, the Lady Blazers opened the third on a 6-1 run to bring the score to 44-15 with 4:28 to go in the third quarter. At the end of the frame, Mitchell held on to a 54-24 lead. Mitchell continued their solid play and at the final horn, they scored 71 against Torrington’s 35.

“I was really happy with how we played in the second half,” Halley said. “In a game like that, we need to learn to get better and I really felt like we did that in the second half. We played with intensity and played them even. It wasn’t like they played their younger kids. We were playing even with the same team that whipped us in the first half.”

Taylor Walsh knocked down the Lady Blazers’ only three-pointer on her way to a team-high nine points, along with two boards, two assists and a steal. Logan Murphy was just behind in the scoring department with eight points, eight boards, two assists and a steal. Her rebound mark paced Torrington.

Chrissy Lira chipped in five points, two boards and a steal. A trio of Lady Blazers in Adia Sherbeyn, Brielle Bivens and Sam Hill contributed four points apiece. The trio also combined for six rebounds and three steals.

Dani Masterson rounded out the scoring with a point of her own along with a rebound. Brooklyn Tucker, Hailey Hashman and Laura Halley combined for seven boards and a block.

“They are a very good basketball team,” Halley said of Mitchell. “They have 2-3 played that will play at the next level. By playing good teams, win or lose, we hope we continue to improve for our conference opponents coming up.”

The loss drops Torrington to 3-7 on the season. The Lady Blazers return to action Friday on the road against Wheatland, with the conference game set to tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
