TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School wrestling team fell to Scottsbluff, Neb. 60-21 on Tuesday evening, as the Blazers battled around five open weights.

Scottsbluff took an early lead with first period falls at 138 and 145 pounds, but momentum started shifting in Torrington’s favor at 152 pounds.

Cody Pierce picked up Torrington’s first win of the night with a fall in the first period.

The win was the first of four wins over a span of five weights.

Tyler Juma also got a first period fall at 172 pounds, while Gabe Mitchell held on for a 3-1 win at 182 pounds. Rhiley Grubbs capped off the run with a fall in the opening period at 195 pounds.

“That’s our meat and potatoes of our team right now,” THS coach Jared Hatley said. “Those guys have been hammers all year.”

The win gave Torrington a short-lived 21-18 lead.

Grubbs pin was also the last win of the night for the Blazers.

Torrington was open at 220, 285, 106, 113 and 132, while Scottsbluff nabbed wins at 120 and 126 pounds to close out the night.

“It’s been a rough year as far as numbers go. Between that and illness and everything else going on, we are fighting to keep our heads above water,” Hatley said. “I fully anticipate being back at it next week and continuing to making strides.”

Despite the loss, Hatley has seen consistent improvement from everyone on the roster.

“Everyone’s doing good things right now,” he said. “Our young guys are really doing well. Everyone is making improvements. They are keeping their heads up and staying in the fight.”

The Blazers will not be attending the Shane Shatto Tournament in Douglas this weekend. Torrington will travel to Cheyenne to face Cheyenne Central on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Action begins at 5 p.m.
