DOUGLAS – The Torrington Trailblazers managed to pick up only one win at the 3A East Regional Tournament in Douglas over the weekend, falling to Newcastle in a game that could have sent Torrington to the state tournament.

Worland 50, Torrington 47

The Blazers came out a bit slow, with a Josh Posten bucket late in the first cutting the Worland advantage to 10-6. By halftime, the Warriors were up 16-15.

Torrington matched its first-half scoring in the third quarter, putting up 15 points, while Worland also put up 15, putting the score at 31-30 with a frame to go. With 4:50 to go, Worland took a 39-33 lead but Torrington cut into that lead and with 1:30 left, the Blazers were up 45-42. The Warriors took a 46-45 lead, but another Blazer bucket gave the Blazers a 47-46 lead with 25 ticks left. Worland rattled off four-straight points to seal the win.

In the game, both Jordan Malm and Jared Lemmon recorded 11 points apiece, both knocking down a three-pointer. Lemmon also racked up eight rebounds and three assists, while Malm added a board and two assists.

Nathan Stitt amassed eight points and filled his stat line with four rebounds, two assists, a steal and two blocks. Bryan Lemmon paced the Blazers on the boards, coming down with 10 rebounds, which he paired with seven points, two assists, three steals and a block.

Josh Posten notched four points, while Bo Moorehouse and Sam Firminhac both had three points. Moorehouse had two assists, while Firminhac kicked in a rebound and a steal.

Torrington 48, Wheatland 27

After an opening round loss to Worland, Torrington hit the ground running in a loser-out game against Wheatland, opening the game on a 12-0 run over the first five minutes. At the end of the first quarter, Torrington held a 12-2 lead. Both teams poured in eight points in the second quarter to put the halftime score at 20-10.

The Bulldogs started cutting into the lead in the third quarter, but a three-pointer by Bryan Lemmon at the horn gave Torrington a 29-22 lead heading into the final eight minutes of action. The Blazers racked up 21 points in the final frame, while Wheatland was held to five points, giving Torrington the lopsided win.

Jared Lemmon again stepped up in the scoring category, amassing 18 points, including nine from behind the arc. He finished the night with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Bryan Lemmon chipped in 11 points, along with four points, an assist and a steal. Stitt rounded out the Blazers in double-figures, finishing the game with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Malm and Posten combined for nine points to round out the scoring for Torrington. Posten had a rebound, while Malm recorded a board, two assists and a steal.

Ryan Johnson was kept out of the scoring column, but still finished the game with eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Firminhac, Lathen Canaday and Devin Flores combined for two rebounds, an assist and a block.

Newcastle 64, Torrington 48

In another loser-out game, where the winner advances to the state tournament, both teams traded blows in the first quarter, with Torrington trailing Newcastle 11-10 after the first frame. By halftime, the Dogies only held a two-point advantage, with the score at 24-22.

Returning to the floor after intermission, Newcastle exploded for 21 points in the third quarter, while Torrington was limited to nine. With eight minutes to go, the Dogies led 45-31. Another 19 points for Newcastle in the fourth sealed the win for the Dogies, ending Torrington’s year.

Jared Lemmon again paced Torrington in scoring with 14 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal to his credit. Stitt tallied 11 points, five boards, two assists, two steals and three blocks in the game.

Malm turned in 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals to round out the top scorers. Bryan Lemmon was not far behind, notching nine points, six boards, three assists, a steal and four blocks. Posten was the final Blazer to score with four points, a rebound, an assist and a steal.

The Blazers ended the year with a 12-11 season, falling one win shy of making the state tournament. Buffalo and Rawlins are the top-two teams coming out of the regional tournament heading toward the state tournament, with Newcastle and Worland rounding out the east competitors.
