Throwers propel local indoor athletes

LARAMIE – Torrington’s Nathaniel Woodruff and Corbin Harris were two of nine top-15 finishes among the Goshen County indoor tracksters over the weekend in Laramie.

“The Goshen County athletes continue to improve each week,” coach Mike Lashley said. “It has been fun to watch these kids begin to understand the nuances of competing indoors. Although it is difficult to be motivated each day to train in the halls and in the gym, our athletes have embraced the challenges and have worked hard to get better.”

In the shot put, Woodruff recorded a throw of 44 feet, 11 inches to take fourth. Harris was not far behind with a throw of 42 feet, 6 inches, securing eighth.

In the boys 800-meter run, Lingle-Fort Laramie’s Landen Fuller clocked a time of 2:04.31, earning him second. He was also on the winning 4x400-meter relay team, which won with a time of 3:38.37. Torrington’s Aaron Borger joined Fuller in the 800, finishing 13th with a time of 2:19.24.

Torrington’s Nakalyn Garner had the best finish among the local girls competing in Laramie, snagging fourth in the pole vault after clearing eight feet. Lady Dogger Jordyn Gaspers cleared 4 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to tie for sixth.

On the track, Torrington’s Latasha Wiford picked up a 15th-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.26 seconds. L-FL’s Cora Frederick clocked a time of 7:06.21 in the 1,600-meter run to take 15th.

The local competitors helped the Cheyenne Central girls team to a first-place finish with 174 points. The local boys and the Cheyenne Central boys combined for 83 points, finishing third as a team.

A select group of local competitors will join in the Indians this weekend at the prestigious Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho, which will have athletes from across the United States and Canada. The entire team will return to action Feb. 23 at the University of Wyoming Fieldhouse in Laramie.

“We will make a hard push in training the next few weeks, before tapering down in preparation for the state indoor meet,” Lashley said. “I am excited to see these athletes compete in Gillette in a few weeks.”
