Three EWC women recognized

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers Pamela Bethel, Lauren O’Connell and Abril Rexach Roure were all named All-Region IX South, while Bethel was also named to the all-tournament team.

Bethel had an outstanding season for the Lady Lancers, averaging a double-double on the year with 16.9 points and 14.6 rebounds per game. She shot 50.6 percent from the floor, including 40.9 percent from behind the arc, while knocking down 70.9 percent of shots from the charity stripe. She had the highest shooting percentage from the floor and from deep among all Lady Lancers this winter.

On the glass, Bethel was a force, hauling in 10.5 defensive and 4.1 offensive rebounds per game, both of which were team-highs. She also rounded out her stat line with 0.9 assists and 1.7 steals per contest.

During the course of the season, Bethel notched 17 double-doubles in EWC’s 32 games. With the turn of the calendar into 2018, the sophomore recorded 13 of her double-doubles, missing the mark in only five games this calendar year.

Two of those games where she did not get a double-double came in both postseason games, but her efforts were still enough to be named to the all-tournament team. Against Otero Junior College, Bethel notched 20 points and nine rebounds. In Casper for the quarterfinals, Bethel recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four blocks against Miles Community College.

Fellow sophomore O’Connell was second in scoring for EWC, averaging 15.9 points a game on 43.8 percent shooting and 40.5 percent shooting from behind the arc. O’Connell knocked down 75 three-pointers this winter, which was 28 more than Bethel’s 47. She was second on the team at the charity stripe at 75 percent. O’Connell finished the season averaging 3.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

O’Connell scored in double-figures in 22 of EWC’s 31 games she played this winter. She scored 34 against Central Wyoming College on Nov. 20 and poured in 31 against Northeastern Junior College on Jan. 25, including 24 points from deep, where she shot 8-of-9.

Rexach rounded out the three Lady Lancers who received postseason recognition and she was the third EWC woman to average in the double-digits this year. She finished the season averaging 12.3 points per game on 42.6 percent shooting.

As a guard, Rexach really found her groove distributing the ball. She averaged five assists per game, on top of 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.

Rexach’s highest scoring output came on Dec. 2 when she dropped 29 points against Central Wyoming College. In that same game, she also had a season-high 10 assists. Her next closest night in terms of assists came on Jan. 29 against Laramie County Community College when she had nine.

Bethel, O’Connell and Rexach helped the Lady Lancers get to a 21-11 record this winter. EWC reached the Region IX Tournament, but lost in the quarterfinals to Miles Community College.
