Second-annual free community dinner in the works

GOSHEN COUNTY – For the second year, residents are coming together to host a free community Thanksgiving for all.

A local couple – who requested to remain anonymous – created the event last year, and continues the tradition this year, with the help of their Life Group at SONrise Church in Torrington.

“One of the Life Groups with SONrise Church … is helping to bring this event together,” the couple said. “Our Life Group meets regularly and (has) become family, serving the needs of the church and community.”

Last year’s dinner was held at the now-condemned Lingle Legion Hall, so the 2018 feast is planned for 307 Sports Bar & Grill at 1500 East Valley Rd. in Torrington on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The employees of the 307 will have the day off to be with their families,” organizers explained. “Everyone helping with the dinner (are) volunteers from the Life Group and community.”

Although the event is completely free and open to all, food donations are being accepted at 307 Sports Bar & Grill. Dry and packaged items, such as canned beans, potatoes, corn, stuffing, etc. may be dropped off at any time, whereas frozen and cold food should be donated the week of Thanksgiving.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by Tuesday, Nov. 20 to help organizers reserve enough tables and prepare food – however, all walk-ins are welcome.

“Last year, we served 78 people … and delivered food after to families,” the couple said. “Leftover food will be given out to families and delivered to those that give us a call.”

For more information, or to donate food, call (307) 575-0719 or (307) 575-9177, or email julsmiller40@gmail.com. A complete list of needed items is available at 307 Sports Bar & Grill.

“(The Community Thanksgiving) is for anyone in need, alone, doesn’t want to cook, or just moved to town,” the couple said. “Last year, we had a family that called a day before Thanksgiving that had just moved here that week and asked if they could come. We welcomed them, visited with them while they ate, and several Goshen County community members helped them move.

“We delight in the joy of being thankful and giving on Thanksgiving and the entire year through. God’s blessings to everyone.”
