Stitt signs for Golden Eagles

TORRINGTON – Torrington senior Nathan Stitt signed his national letter of intent April 27 to play soccer for Laramie County Community College in the fall.

“It was a little overwhelming making this decision about my future, but it is nice to have everyone here supporting me,” Stitt said after signing.

Stitt has experienced a lot of success on the pitch for the Blazers. He was all-conference as a freshman in 2015 and was named all-conference and all-state in both 2016 and 2017. As a junior, Stitt was named the underclassman of the year in 3A.

Those accolades did not come unearned. In 2015, he filled his stat line with 16 goals and 15 assists. As a sophomore, he racked up 20 goals and 12 assists and finished last season with 19 goals and eight assists. Last spring, he stepped between the pipes in a couple games and racked up 22 saves as a keeper.

So far this season, Stitt has excelle. He has racked up 33 goals and nine assists this year. He ranks first in the classification in goals this season.

In part due to Stitt, the Blazer boys soccer program has made an impact across the state over the past couple years. Over the past three years, Torrington reached the state tournament each season, with a third-place finish in 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2017.

“Every year that I have been here, the culture has grown and the expectations have grown and more and more kids keep coming,” Stitt said of the Blazer program.

Stitt excelled off the pitch as well in other sports. He was a two-time all-state player (2016, 2017) in football and also earned all-conference for football in 2015. The senior was a key contributor for the Blazer basketball team as well, but soccer is where his heart is.

“It was pretty much soccer the whole way,” Stitt said. “This is the sport I enjoy the most. It’s something I’ve played my whole life. I’ve become good at it and I watch a lot of it. I just enjoy the sport.”

Stitt is looking forward to his time for the Golden Eagles this fall.

“LCCC is a great program and they have been great for many years. I was very happy to receive an offer from them,” he said. “I really like coach Gibson and the assistant coach and it is close to home and in Wyoming.”

According to LCCC head coach Vince Gibson, Stitt is the sixth Wyoming signing for the Golden Eagles this year. Along with three returning Wyoming players from last year, Stitt will be one of nine players from the Cowboy state for LCCC next year. Gibson said he sees a lot of strength in Stitt’s game and that the Blazer can fit in anywhere in the Golden Eagle attack later down the road.

“I’ve come to watch him play a few times and been pretty impressed with what he’s done. He is a great attacker,” Gibson said. “He is a good dribbler with good speed, can shoot the ball, has great vision for passing and that can all help us out. We feel like we can help him grow a little bit as well, so we are excited to have him.”

Before heading to Cheyenne, Stitt is still a captain on the pitch for the Blazers this season. Currently, Torrington sits at 8-6-1 on the year and is still in the running for an automatic qualification for the state tournament. The Blazers are the returning state runners-up, but Stitt is looking for more this year.

“We plan on winning our quadrant and getting in a pretty good position at state,” Stitt said. “I think if it’s any year, this is our year to win one.”
