MORRILL, Neb. – The Southeast High School track and field team began its outdoor season at the Morrill Early Bird Invite.
The Cyclone teams were short-handed on the Saturday meet. However, the boys came away with a seventh-place finish, while the girls’ team finished eighth in the 13-team event.
Junior Shelby Ekwall led Southeast with the team’s only individual win of the weekend.
Ekwall picked up right where she left off at the state meet last May – on top of the shot put standings. She won the event with a throw of 37 feet, 5 inches. She won the event by more than 3 feet over Kaitlyn Craig of Leyton, Nebraska. Sophomore Harper Boche also placed in the event in sixth with a toss of 32-1.
Ekwalll also finished third in discuss with a throw of 100 feet. Senior Bree Coxbill was eighth at 88-5.
In pole vault, freshman Angie Logsdon finished second, clearing 7-6. In triple jump, senior Grace Desmond finished third at 30 feet, while Logsdon was eighth at 28-2.
In the relay events, the 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Taylor Hanson, Logsdon, Desmond and sophomore Sasha Haines finished fifth in 4 minutes, 46.29 seconds, while the 4x100 team, consisting of the same four runners finished 10th in 58.79 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, Haines finished sixth in 1:07.87, while sophomore Baylie Booth was 10th in 1:13.18.
The Lady Cyclones scored 34 points to finish eighth. Crawford won the team title with 84 points.
In the boys’ division, junior Wyatt Campbell led the team with a pair of second-place finishes.
He finished second in the 100-meter dash in 11.83 seconds and placed second in the 200-meter dash in 24.12 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Campbell, Matthew Chapman, Grant Logsdon and Austin Short placed second in 46.74 seconds. The 4x400 team of Dawson Mullock, Kannon Tippetts, Cole Sauer and Short placed fourth in 4:03.33.
Mullock also finished second in long jump at 18 feet. Short was 10th at 16-7 and Sauer 13th at 16-2. In triple jump, senior Grant Logsdon was sixth at 37-4.25, while Short was seventh at 37-2. Mullock was 10th at 36-6.
In other field events, Logsdon was fourth in pole vault at 11 feet, while Kirk Kay cleared eight feet to finish 13th. In high jump, Sauer and Tippetts both cleared 5 feet and tied for seventh. Kay had a height of 4-6 to place 16th.
The Southeast boys finished seventh with 41 points. Mitchell, Nebraska won the team title with 95 points.
Southeast returns to action on Saturday, April 2 at the Bayard CD Invite. Action gets underway at 9 a.m.
