HANNA – With three wrestlers finishing second in their weight class, the Southeast Cyclones took fifth as a team at the Carbon County Invite over the weekend in Hanna.

“Overall, we had a solid weekend,” coach Matt Bullington said. “It was nice to see some competition from the other side of the state.”

The Cyclones had three wrestlers compete at 106 pounds over the weekend. Brock Blevins had the best finish, taking second. He started with a pin over Jerry Everett (Saratoga) in 32 seconds, before getting a win over teammate Kaden Brothwell to advance to the championship match. Pinedale’s Keegan Gehlhausen got the better of Blevins, winning by a 16-5 decision.

In the same weight class, Greg Logsdon marched his way to a fourth-place finish. He won his first match by pin in the second period over Kylee Smith (Kemmerer), before falling by pin late in the second against Gehlhausen. Once in the lower bracket, Logsdon picked up a win over teammate Brothwell, before defaulting to injury in the third-place match to finish fourth.

Brothwell was the final 106-pounder to compete. He won his first match by pin in 50 seconds against Tanner Vogel (Big Piney), before falling to Blevins. In the lower bracket, he pinned Big Piney’s Arie Kranendonk in the third period, before pinning Lingle-Fort Laramie’s Joel Costello in the first period. Brothwell’s weekend was ended with a loss to Logsdon.

Chase Lovercheck was another Cyclone to take second, competing at 152 pounds. After a bye, Lovercheck bested Cokeville’s Devan Moody in a 9-8 decision, before going the distance against Adam Willoughby, winning in a 10-5 decision. Once in the championship match, Lovercheck was pinned by Cordell Viehweg (Cokeville) in the second period.

Brian Baker picked up the final silver for Southeast. At 195 pounds, he had two byes, before winning in a 9-4 decision over Kemmerer’s Jeydon Boyd to advance to the title match. T.J. Frazier (Big Piney) went the distance with Baker, winning in a 12-10 decision to put the Cyclone in second.

Tate Carson picked up a third-place finish at 182 pounds. He won his first match by pinning Wind River’s Colton Befus 19 seconds into the second period. Against Rick Nate (Cokeville), Carson went the distance but lost in a 7-5 decision. In the lower bracket, Carson pinned Big Piney’s Damon Blair in 47 seconds. He went the distance in the third-place match against Lusk’s Pacen Gifford, winning in an 8-0 major decision.

Brady Tosh and Ethan Steinhausen both competed at 160 pounds for Southeast. Tosh started with a pin in the third period against Austin Seeley (Wright), before pinning Lusk’s Cole Mellot in the first. He suffered a loss via pin in the first period against Antheny Petersen (Cokeville), dropping him to the lower bracket, where he was pinned in the second by Damien Molzahn (Lusk).

Steinhausen was pinned in his first match by Brayden Johnson (Cokeville). He won against Bryston Beck (Rawlins) by pin in the first, before being pinned in the second by Burns/Pine Bluffs’ Lash Branigan.

Southeast amassed 73 points with three second-place finishes, a third-place finish and a fourth-place finish. Cokeville stood atop the team standings with 172.5 points, followed by Kemmerer’s 155.5 points and Pinedale’s 129 points.

The Cyclones hit the road this weekend for the 2A East Regional Tournament in Burns. Action kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“When we get into the regional tournament, the key is to get into the top-four,” Bullington said. “If you want to shore up a good spot, then you want to get into that top-four. Then up in Casper (at the state tournament), Casper is Casper – two losses and you’re out.”
