Southeast falls in four to Mitchell

YODER – The Southeast Lady Cyclones volleyball fell 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 26-24, 25-18) Tuesday night’s interstate match with Mitchell, Neb.

In the opening set, the visiting Tigers came out swinging, grabbing an 13-2.

During the opening 15 points, Lady Cyclone coach Roxanne Jolovich used both of her time outs, and after the second timeout, Southeast finally got going.

A two-hit possession by Mitchell followed by a kill from senior Ellie Schmitt sparked the Lady Cyclone rally.

Another error by the Tigers, cut the Southeast deficit to 15-11, forcing Mitchell to use one of their time outs.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Cyclones continued to chip away at the deficit and eventually took an 18-17 advantage following two more errors by the visitors.

It was a lead which Southeast never surrendered again the rest of the set.

In the second set, the Lady Cyclones held an early 5-4 lead before Mitchell went on a pair of runs.

The Tigers used 7-1 and 6-2 runs to pull away from Southeast.

In the third set, it was a back-and-forth battle.

Neither team held a larger than a three-point lead.

Senior Hailey Anderson’s kill tied the set at 19 and spark a 4-2 spurt which was capped off with a pair of kills from Schmitt to give Southeast a 22-21 lead.

However, Mitchell responded with a 5-2 run to close out the set.

In the fourth, Southeast jumped out to an early lead, but Mitchell tied the match at 16, closing out the set and match with a 9-2 run.

Schmitt led the Lady Cyclones with 10 kills and 10 digs. She also dished out eight assists. Anderson added nine kills, seven digs and a team-high four blocks. Macie Murphy added nine digs, while Marjie Schmitt tallied 12 assists, two aces, two kills and four digs.

The loss drops Southeast to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the 2A Southeast.

The Lady Cyclones host Wright (15-3 and 3-0 in the 2A Northeast) at 4 p.m. Friday.
