Southeast Cyclones slip in overtime on road

MITCHELL, Neb. – The Southeast Cyclones boys basketball team let a 46-39 lead go in the fourth quarter and were unable to close out the game in overtime, falling on the road to Mitchell on Tuesday, 54-52.

Mitchell had a solid start, outscoring Southeast 12-7 after the first quarter. Both teams doubled up their scoring output in the second quarter, with the Tigers racking up 24 and the Cyclones tallying 14. At halftime, Southeast was down 36-21.

“It wasn’t like we played bad in the first half, Mitchell just hit all of their shots,” coach Crockett Herring said.

The Cyclones turned things around when they returned to the floor for the second half, outscoring the home team 25-3 in the third quarter to build a 46-39 lead of its own.

“We played the best quarter of basketball all season in that third quarter,” Herring said. “We rebounded the ball and got out in front of them and it led to easy shots. We got on a roll and continued on it.”

Mitchell was not going away easily, putting up 11 points in the fourth to Southeast’s four, sending the game into overtime with the score tied at 50. In the overtime period, Mitchell accounted for four points and Southeast was limited to two, giving the Tigers the narrow win.

“We gave a lot of effort in that third quarter and our gas tank was a little empty in the fourth and overtime,” Herring said.

Sterling Werner had a double-double in the loss, tallying 20 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists, three steals and two blocks, all of which were team-highs. He shot 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Hayden Anderson poured in nine points for Southeast, along with four boards, an assist and two steals. Kaden Malm stepped back into the lineup after an injury and he finished the game with seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Cade Herring matched Malm’s scoring with seven points, while accounting for a rebound and two steals of his own.

Brady Fullmer notched four points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brant Fullmer and Bodie Herring rounded out the scoring, combining for five points, three rebounds and two steals.

The loss ended the Cyclones’ four-game winning streak. Southeast holds a 6-9 record on the year, with a 3-0 conference record. The Cyclones played Lingle-Fort Laramie on Thursday after the press deadline and they return to action Friday on the road against Pine Bluffs, with a 6 p.m. tipoff.

“If you start looking to the next opponents, you lose focus on what you’re supposed to be doing,” Herring said of the slew of upcoming conference games. “We are so young and just trying to get better that I’m more worried about us and not about anyone else.”
