Southeast boys face stiff opponents

SHOSHONI – The Southeast Cyclones faced three ranked teams at the Wrangler Invitational in Shoshoni, falling to Rocky Mountain and suffering close losses to Little Snake River and Farson-Eden.

Rocky Mountain 62, Southeast 49

The Cyclones started hot against third-ranked Burlington, taking a 17-16 lead into the second quarter. The Grizzlies rallied in the second quarter, outscoring Southeast 16-9 to hold a 32-26 lead at the break. In the third, the Cyclones were only outscored by two (10-8), before being outscored 20-15 in the fourth, ending the game with a 62-49 score.

Hayden Anderson paced Southeast in scoring with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Andersound rounded out his stat sheet with four boards and a team-high three steals.

Seniors Kaden Malm and Brady Fullmer both turned in nine points. Malm also had three rebounds a steal and a team-high three assists, while Fullmer kicked in two boards and an assist. Fellow senior Sterling Werner led Southeast on the boards with five rebounds, while adding eight points, an assist and two steals.

Brant Fullmer, with three points, and Tim Becker, with two points, rounded out the scoring for the Cyclones.

Southeast shot 42 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point land, behind Rocky Mountain’s marks of 49 percent and 35 percent from deep. The Cyclones were outrebounded 27-18 in the loss.

Little Snake River 58, Southeast 50

The Cyclones again kept things tight in the first frame, keeping the deficit to two points (14-12). By halftime, Southeast was down 26-20. The Cyclones came out hot in the third quarter, erasing much of their deficit after outscoring the Rattlers 16-12. The fourth quarter proved to be the difference, with 1A’s second-ranked Little Snake River scoring 20 points to Southeast’s 14 to seal the 58-50 win.

Malm turned in 11 points in the loss to lead Southeast. He also led the way in the assist department with five. Fullmer accounted for 10 points, six boards and three assists. Cade Herring chipped in nine points and two rebounds.

Werner stepped up on the boards, hauling in nine rebounds, which he paired with six points, an assist and a steal. Anderson and Bodie Herring chipped in five points apiece. Sawyer Anderson, Brant Fullmer and Becker combined for four points to round out the scoring. Hayden Anderson had four boards, an assist and a steal, while Brant Fullmer kicked in two boards.

The Cyclones’ shooting percentage dropped to 33 percent from the field and only 24 percent from behind the arc (6-for-25). Southeast did out rebound Little Snake River 27-25, despite the loss.

Farson-Eden 54, Southeast 52

Southeast ended its weekend by taking on 1A’s other second-ranked team in Farson-Eden. The Cyclones came out on fire, holding a 13-6 advantage after the first eight minutes of action. After both teams put up 13 points in the second, Southeast had a 26-19 lead. The third quarter was the demise for the Cyclones, with Farson-Eden outscoring Southeast 17-8. Both teams poured in 18 points in the fourth to give the Pronghorns the 54-52 win.

Malm again topped the scoring sheet, racking up a game-high 17 points, including six points from three-point land and five points from the charity stripe. The senior added three boards, two assists and a steal to his stat line.

Anderson was the second Cyclone in double-figures, piling up 15 points and five rebounds. Fullmer chipped in seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Werner had another solid game with 12 rebounds, six points, three assists and two steals.

Bodie Herring, Cade Herring, Brant Fullmer and Tim Becker combined for eight points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Cyclones now sit at 1-5 on the young season. They return to the hardwood on the road to take on Bayard, Neb. on Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Southeast starts 2018 with the Big Horn Invitational on Jan. 5-6.
