TORRINGTON – A section of Main Street in downtown Torrington will be closed starting Monday for about a week to allow for concrete demolition and replacement at the intersection of Main and 20th Streets.
Mark Weis, project manager for the city of Torrington, said Thursday the project will address issues in front of Pinnacle Bank, where concrete “heaves” every summer. Workers will break and remove existing concrete.
“We’re adding an expansion joint and replacing the concrete so (the heaving problem) doesn’t happen,” Weis said.
To accommodate the project, Main Street will be closed to north-south traffic at the intersection, Weis said. East-west traffic on 20th Street will be allowed to flow as normal.
Parking along the southern portion of the 2000 block of Main Street will not be allowed, but parking on the northern about half of the block will still be open. An area will be set aside for motorist to turn around and either park on the east side of the street or exit the block to the north if they have business downtown during the work.
Weis expects the work will be completed by the end of the week, March 9, but the street won’t be reopened to normal traffic flows until the following Monday, March 12, to allow time for the concrete to cure.
Weis said there will be signs posted, alerting motorists of the approaching work area.
