YODER – A pair of Southeast Lady Cyclone juniors in Ellie Schmitt and Hailey Anderson earned all-state, all-conference and SEWAC all-conference recognitions.
“Those are two really neat kids,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “They’re talented but also extremely hard workers. You can’t get better in three and a half months (during the season) and they recognize that and work better all year long.”
Schmitt was an all-conference snub last year that came back with a vengeance this year. Throughout the postseason, she averaged 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She had four games with more than 15 points. She also had an assist and 2.75 steals per game.
Anderson made the all-conference list last year, but she is a first-time all-state honoree this winter. Over the past six games, she had two double-doubles, averaging 10.2 points and 7.8 boards throughout the postseason. She often led the Lady Cyclones in assists, averaging 3.7 per contest throughout regionals and state, along with 2.4 steals per game.
“Those two are really good at using the people around them,” Scheer said. “Teams might be able to slow them, but they can still move the ball around. It gave us a lot of different options.”
Both of Southeast’s all-state players will be back next year as seniors.
“Having the flexibility in their positions is great,” Scheer said of both Schmitt and Anderson returning next season. “I can move them really anywhere on the floor.”
On this year’s all-state list, Greybull, Lovell, Southeast, Sundance and Wyoming Indian all had two honorees. Big Piney, Lusk, Pine Bluffs and Rocky Mountain all had one player recognized as all-state.
