Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise and call her blessed

If you ever met her, you never forgot her. Her hug of greeting was always followed by, “My name is Granny and if you don’t call me that you are in BIG trouble!” Many people didn’t know what her “real” name was, and she loved that! She had a laugh that was uniquely hers. She had a hug that drew you to her heart. You called her Granny, and I called her mom.

My mom loved anything and everything pink. Their home in Lingle was named, “The Pink Ponderosa”. The trim on the house made it perfectly clear that pink was her color. She even went as far to take their refrigerator to the body shop and have it painted. You guessed it, pink.

My mom was known for her banana bread. Giving away hundreds if not a thousand loaves in her life time, it was rare for her not to have a loaf tucked under her arm. I was the recipient of her bread pans and recipe. The day she gave them to me was a hard day for her. The realization had come that she could no longer bake. She passed me the pans and asked me to carry on, even making me promise that when I went to the funeral home after she died that I would not only take a loaf with me, but it would be a hot loaf, and you can bet I did just that.

Every day after school kids would stop by the Pink Ponderosa for a sit on Granny Bakers kitchen bench and she would ask them the same question each day, “What is one thing God did for you today?” My mom not only listened with her ears, but her eyes. Her body language told them at that moment she didn’t have a hundred things to do and they were the most important thing to her.  She listened and they talked. When the conversation was over, they got a sucker or a piece of candy and out the door they went. Every time they walked out the door she told them, “God loves you, and so does Granny Baker”. They knew it to be true.

I will ask you the same question she so often asked, “What is one thing God did for you today?” My prayer is that your list is long and your praises loud.

God loves me this I know, and so did Granny Baker. Happy Mother’s Day mom. I sure love and miss you.
