Loya wins Kimball Invite

KIMBALL, Neb. – Junior Ayden Loya topped the field of runners at the Kimball Invite on Friday, Sept. 10 by 24 seconds.

Loya was the lone runner to complete the 5K run in under 19 minutes, with a winning time of 18 minutes, 36.47 seconds. His closest competitor was Cheyenne South’s Jack Bechtel, who finished second in 19:00.58.

Loya took the lead for good in the latter stages of the race to score his first win of the season.

Blazer sophomore Myles Wilson finished sixth in 19:38.22, while senior Kyland Fuller was 11th in 20:21.79. Senior Weston Cronk finished one spot behind Fuller in 12th in 20:32.61. Senior Michael Sandusky finished 15th in 21:06.98, and junior Colin Taylor was 25th in 21:51.82. Freshman Hunter Massie was 32nd in 23:11.86, while sophomore Sab Munoz was 36th in 23:27.32.

As a team, the Blazers finished second with 18 points. Cheyenne South won the team title with 11 points. Pine Bluffs/Burns was a distant third with 49 points.

In the girls’ division, sophomore Ada Merrigan led the Lady Blazers with a sixth-place finish in 23:51.86. The freshman duo of Callie Taylor (25:05.41) and Tiffany Kruger (25:40.93) placed 13th and 14th, respectively. Junior Amberly Froerer was 16th in 25:53.78.

As a team, the Lady Blazers finished tied for second with Morrill, Nebraska with 28 points. Pine Bluffs/Burns won the team title with 13 points. Bridgeport was fourth with 31 points.

The Torrington runners will be back in action in Alliance, Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 18.
