WHSAA COVID-19 update

The WHSAA Board of Directors, representing the 72 members schools in Wyoming, is issuing the following guidance as we proceed with our school activities.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHSAA has suspended all extracurricular activities statewide, beginning Monday, March 16th through at least March 28, 2020, with schools having the option to extend the timeline should they choose.

The 3A/4A State Basketball Tournament will not take place this year. We understand the tremendous disappointment this decision is for our student athletes, especially our seniors, but please realize that we must be a responsible state organization and that our highest priority is ensuring the safety of our students, schools and communities.

Spring sport practices will be allowed at the discretion of each school district. The WHSAA staff will continue to work diligently with the state entities that are experts in this area and follow their guidance as we proceed in determining the best course of action with the remainder of the spring activities. We encourage all our schools to do the same with their local and county experts.

UW, Mountain West cancel seasons

LARAMIE – University of Wyoming Athletics has announced effective immediately that all spring sport competitions are officially canceled. This includes all Mountain West Conference and non-conference events, home and away. This change from suspending to canceling spring sport competitions coincides with an announcement by the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors announcing that all Mountain West spring sport competitions and MW Championships are now canceled.

The MW Board has also established a moratorium on all on-campus and off-campus in-person recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

There are other questions that cannot be answered at this time surrounding the rapidly changing situation. As future decisions are made, UW Athletics will share that information on GoWyo.com and through its social media channels.

All decisions made by University of Wyoming Athletics regarding the COVID-19 situation will focus on the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans, overall University of Wyoming community and the larger state of Wyoming community.

Odd Couple postponed

TORRINGTON – Due to the closure of Eastern Wyoming College through at least March 23, the Board of Goshen Community Theatre has made the decision to postpone the entire production of THE ODD COUPLE, scheduled to open Thursday, March 19 and run through March 28.
Future performance dates will be released as soon as possible. Anyone holding tickets to the original dates will have those tickets honored.

Wyoming FFA cancels events

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming FFA has canceled the 2020 Wyoming FFA Convention, scheduled to be held April 15-18, in Cheyenne. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat and the closure of partner facilities we rely on to conduct the convention. LCCC, UW, Casper College and EWC have closed their campuses for the next two to six weeks, including the dates scheduled for the 2020 Wyoming FFA Convention. Wyoming FFA relies on these facilities, staff and students to conduct our events.

In light of the closure of these facilities and in an abundance of caution for public health, we made the decision to cancel the convention. The Employment Skills Leadership Development Event on March 28, as well as the Vet Science Career Development Event on April 4, are also canceled.

Our first responsibility remains the health and safety of our members, advisors, families and communities. Wyoming FFA Board of Directors, state staff and I will begin to evaluate options to determine if the convention will be rescheduled, if national qualifying events will be rescheduled and how state officers will be elected.

There are still a lot of variables we don’t know right now concerning rescheduling, including when campuses will open, school districts will be cleared for travel or when this public health crisis will be over. We will monitor the situation through March 30 and provide an update at that time.
