Dear Mayor Varney,

We would like to take this opportunity to commend the City of Torrington for some important imcrovements to our community. First, the improvements the City has made the last couple of years to the Union Pacific Depot have been significant. The reconditioning efforts on this building have been important not only aesthetically but have saved this historic structure from further deterioration. It is a very attractive and functional remodel and allows the Homesteaders Museum to accommodate events and exhibits such as the most recent Smithsonian exhibit, “The Way We Worked.”

Also, a big thanks to the Water Department for the demolition and removal of the abandoned substation located along the south side of the railroad tracks near the old Century Lumber shed.

The substation has long been in disrepair, an eye sore and nuisance.

It is due to your community mindedness and forward thinking that this and other properties have been cleaned up around the town. The city taking the lead on this is very beneficial and it might encourage others to be conscious of the appearance of our town.

Thank you,

Neil and Deidre Newman
