I think more people should take up an interest in historical topics. I understand that everyone has their own personal preferences, and for some people, these topics are considered boring, but they don’t have to be. History covers a wide array of subjects.
In a school setting, history can seem like it’s nothing but memorizing dates, but it’s not. When it’s personal research, you don’t have to remember anything other than what you want to. If certain dates or facts aren’t relevant to you then you don’t have to worry about retaining that info.
There are so many things to be learned and amazing stories that are just waiting to be told.
If we never explore the historical topics or historical things in our area one day they’ll be lost forever. Buildings fall, memories are forgotten and stories are lost to time. If we don’t learn about these things when we get the chance, we may never get the chance again.
I love history. I love to learn about places and people that are long gone. I’ve also always been curious about my family background and where I came from.
It’s amazing to me the butterfly effect that can be seen when studying historical topics. Whether you are learning about a large subject like a war or a small subject like airplanes, it is easy to see where certain decisions led to the final result.
Recently, I was working on an article about Rock Creek, when my son asked me what I was doing. I told him and asked if he would like to learn about it. Before I knew it, I was reading him what I was writing and answering questions. When it was time for him to go to bed, he begged me not to work on it without him, because he wanted to learn more. I told him I had to finish it, but I would make sure to read it to him when I was finished.
I didn’t force him to learn about the topic. I only focused on satisfying his curiosity about my work and the subject. However, before I knew it, he was asking me questions and wanting to learn more.
It’s times like those that can ignite one’s curiosity to learn about history. It’s also times like those that can help people better understand the world around them.
Studying history can not only help us understand the lives and struggles of others, but it can also put our own lives into perspective.
My experience with learning about history is probably why I don’t believe in regret. Everyone makes decisions in their life that at some point they wish they could change, however, those decisions lead us to where we are today.
We must learn from the past, so we can move forward, but there’s no point in regretting it. All you can do is be thankful for where you are today and hope to make better decisions in the future.
