HAWK SPRINGS – Memorial services for LaVern K. Sanford, 90, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at the Hawk Springs Bible Church with Pastor Ken Bauman officiating. Burial will precede the memorial service, at 10 a.m. Friday morning at the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington.
LaVern died Feb. 11, 2018, at the VA Hospital in Cheyenne. Memorials may be given to the Hawk Springs Fire and Rescue Units or Hawk Springs Bible Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Colyer Funeral Home.
LaVern was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Hawk Springs, the son of Crayton and Drucy (Judy) Sanford. He grew up and received his education in Hawk Springs. He entered the U.S. Army in 1948 and was discharged in 1952.
While in the military in Germany he met Gisela Specht. They were married March 3, 1954, in Saint Johns, New Brunswick, Canada. He worked as a roughneck on drilling rigs for many years in Wyoming and then in Alaska from 1972 until 1980, when he retired and moved back to Hawk Springs. During his retirement he worked for Jirdon Agri Chemical delivering fertilizer.
LaVern enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting. He was a member of the Hawk Springs Fire Department, the American Legion, the VFW and the Lions Club.
LaVern is survived by his wife Gisela of Hawk Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Eugene and Melvin; and a sister Doris Logan.
