Lancers drop rivalry game

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancers fell behind early Saturday against Eastern Wyoming College and were unable to recover in a 106-73 loss against Western Nebraska Community College.

The Lancers came out of the gates solid, taking an 8-7 lead on a three-point bucket by Alek Cosic, but WNCC went on a 10-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. A basket by Brandon Meadows brought the score to 20-14, but the Cougars continued on their run, expanding into a 40-18 lead. By the halftime horn, WNCC lead 55-33.

Coming out of the break, the Cougars picked up where they left off, taking a 71-43 lead less than five minutes into the second half. Another bucket by WNCC gave the visitors a 93-57 lead. The Cougars cruised to the big win.

Jonathan Morrobel was the top scorer for the Lancers, racking up 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. He rounded out his stat line with four rebounds and a team-high three blocks.

Rhythm Ajanku chipped in 14 points and four rebounds. Brandon Meadows, with 12 points, and Cosic, with 11 points, rounded out the Lancers in double-figures. The pair combined for seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Walker Korell paced EWC with eight rebounds, while finishing the night with nine points and the team’s two steals. Nick Holmes kicked in four points, three rebounds and two assists. Daniel Wright, Trey Schroefel and Chad Hinrichs completed the scoring for the Lancers, combining for seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

The loss puts the Lancers at 1-21 on the year. EWC returns to action on the road Wednesday against Laramie County Community College at 7 p.m., followed by a road game Saturday at 4 p.m. against Trinidad State Junior College.
