DOUGLAS – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers posted a 1-2 record at the 3A East Regional Tournament in Douglas over the weekend, falling one win short of making the state tournament.

Worland 45, Torrington 28

There was tough defense by both teams to open the contest, but Worland was able to sneak out to a 6-0 lead. At the end of the first, Torrington was behind 10-6. A three-pointer by Logan Murphy late in the second quarter cut Worland's lead to 18-17 at intermission.

The Lady Warriors came out hot in the third quarter, taking a 26-21 lead into the final eight minutes of action. Worland took over the game starting in the fourth, rushing out to a 33-21 lead. The Lady Warriors didn't look back, taking the 45-28 win.

“Both teams struggled in the first half and we stayed in it to be down only one point at half,” coach Jeff Halley said. “In the second half, they heated up and we never quite got it going.”

Logan Murphy was the top scorer for the Lady Blazers, accounting for 14 points, including seven from the charity stripe and three from behind the arc. She also had a team-high seven boards and team-high five steals, along with a block.

Adia Sherbeyn chipped in eight points for Torrington, including another knocked down three for the team. Sherbeyn rounded out her stat line with five rebounds and four steals. Hailey Hashman drained the third three-pointer on her way to finishing with three points, five rebounds and three steals.

Brielle Bivens and Dani Masterson rounded out the scoring by combining for three points and four rebounds. Sam Hill, Brooklyn Tucker and Laura Halley combined for three rebounds, two steals and a block.

“We didn’t play our best game. We had some trouble shooting and had a hard time stopping their big girls,” Halley said. “We got a little timid. That is usually a bad combination at tournament time.”

Torrington 50, Wheatland 26

Before the game Friday against Wheatland, there were some fireworks. Torrington senior Taylor Walsh has been sidelined with mono for several weeks and did not play in Thursday’s game against Worland, but was cleared by her doctor to play Friday against Wheatland.

The state has a policy where whoever is in the book for the first game is the team’s roster for the remainder of the tournament, deeming Walsh ineligible to play. A call was made to the commissioner and an exception was made for her to return to the floor for the remainder of the weekend, starting with Friday’s 8:30 a.m. game.

Wheatland filed a formal appeal to the state the morning of the game and the state granted Wheatland’s appeal. With 11 minutes left before the start of the game, Walsh was sidelined again and would remain sidelined for the rest of the tournament.

“This entire scenario fired up our girls and we played with some serious attitude against Wheatland,” Halley said. “They were quite upset that their friend and teammate couldn’t play and came out with some amazing fire and focus.”

The Lady Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead to open the game, but Torrington stormed back, taking a 12-6 lead after the first frame. Torrington expanded its lead to 25-13 by intermission. Both teams doubled up their score in the second half, allowing the Lady Blazers to cruise to the 50-26 win.

Tucker stepped up and turned in 11 points to pace Torrington, recording the team’s lone three-pointer on the day. She rounded out her stat line with four boards, six steals and a team-high four assists. Murphy joined Tucker in double-figures, notching 10 points, six boards, three steals and a block.

Sherbeyn was a menace on the defensive end of the floor, piling up nine steals, which she paired with seven points, eight rebounds and an assist. Hashman rounded out the top scorer for Torrington, accounting for five points, six rebounds, an assist and two steals.

Bivens, Hill and Chrissy Lira had four points apiece in the win. Hill notched eight boards and an assist, while Lira added four rebounds and a steal and Bivens packed her stat line with six rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Masterson and Jade Reinhardt rounded out the scoring, combining for five points, three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Renee Cline added two rebounds as well.

“Our girls played hard from the start to the end and never let up,” Halley said. “I was very proud of how they responded to a very strange, difficult and disappointing situation.”

Rawlins 45, Torrington 42

In a rematch of a late-season game where the Lady Outlaws beat the Lady Blazers 51-44, Rawlins took a 7-5 lead in the first quarter of a game where the winner advances to the state tournament and the loser’s season comes to a close. Torrington cut into the lead by one point and was down 20-19 at the break.

Torrington had a huge third quarter, outscoring Rawlins 18-12 in the frame to hold a 37-32 lead heading into the final eight minutes of action. The Lady Outlaws wrestled the lead away from Torrington and held on for the 45-42 win, ending Torrington’s season.

“This was a great basketball game,” Halley said. “Neither team ever had a lead of over five points. I was proud of our girls for battling as hard as they did.”

Murphy finished her high school career with a bang, tallying a double-double in the contest with 19 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Six of her points came from deep and another five from the charity stripe. She had four offensive rebounds.

Tucker nailed 3-of-5 from behind the arc to finish the game with four rebounds, an assist and two steals. Sherbeyn kicked in another six points, five rebounds, an assist and three steals. Hashman contributed four points and five rebounds.

Lira and Hill had two points apiece against Rawlins. The duo combined for five boards, two steals and a block. Masterson and Bivens combined for two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

“We ended up on the wrong side of the score, but it wasn’t for lack of trying,” Halley said. “Our kids left it out there.”

The Lady Blazers finished the year with a 10-13 record, missing the state tournament for the second year in a row. Douglas won the regional tournament over Buffalo, with Worland and Rawlins also qualifying for the state tournament out of the east.

“It is always tough for the season to come to an end with so many seniors, but I think the kids can definitely be proud of what they did this season,” Halley said.
