TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team held on in the closing moments of Tuesday’s 78-70 win over Northeastern Junior College in the team’s home opener.

Three-pointers from freshman Emilia Axelsson and sophomore Paula Martinez Sanz gave the Lady Lancers a 10-2 advantage in the first two minutes of the game.
Eastern Wyoming used a full-court press to force turnovers, converting them into points.
The Lady Lancer’s stingy defense continued into the second quarter.
EWC held Northeastern scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of the frame, pushing the Lady Lancer lead to 39-17 before NJC found the bottom of the net again.
Eastern Wyoming found themselves up 47-23 at the break, but momentum quickly shifted in the visitors favor at the start of the third quarter.
The Lady Plainsmen scored the first 10 points of the half before freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre put EWC on the scoreboard in the third with a free throw.
NJC’s 12-1 run came to an end with an old fashioned 3-point play from freshman Mariana Zanelatto Minotto with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter.

The Lady Plainsmen cut the deficit to eight midway through the fourth quarter, ultimately cutting the deficit to as few as 74-70 with under a minute to play in the game.
