TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team went 0-2 over the Thanksgiving weekend at the Salt Lake Community College Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lady Lancers opened the weekend with a 78-77 loss to Salt Lake.

EWC sophomore Paula Martinez Sanz gave the Lady Lancers the early lead with a 3-pointer in the first 10 seconds of play.

It sparked a 22-7 burst to open the game through the first 10 minutes.

The Lady Lancers pushed their lead to as many as 18 early in the second quarter before SLCC mounted a comeback.

The momentum quickly shifted back in the home team’s favor over the next two periods. The Lady Bruins limited the Lady Lancers to 25 points, while SLCC poured 48 points to take a 55-47 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.

Eastern Wyoming chipped away at the deficit and a pair of made free throws from freshman Montse Gutierrez Ibanez tied the game at 73 with 1:21 remaining in the contest.

The Lady Bruins answered with a trey.

On the ensuing EWC possession, Sanz scored a layup to draw her team back with one at 76-75.

The Lady Lancers managed to get a stop defensively, and with eight seconds left, freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre was fouled and sent to the charity stripe for two shots.

Aguirre nailed both free throws to put EWC back on top 77-76, but in a blink of an eye, Salt Lake went the length of the floor and scored on a layup.

Aguirre’s last second buzzer-beater attempt missed the mark, leading to a one-point loss.

Ibanez led the Lady Lancers with 20 points, while Sanz added 16. Aguirre tossed in 15, while freshman Emilia Axelsson had 13.

The Lady Lancers shot 41.3 percent from the floor, while SLCC shot 42.8 percent.

The next day, EWC fell 66-50 to Utah State Eastern.

The Eagles grabbed an early 16-12 lead in the first quarter, and Utah State Eastern continued to increase the spread for the remainder of the game.

Ibanez led all scorers with 16 points, while Sanz added nine points. Aguirre tossed in eight points and dished out nine assists.

The Lady Lancers (4-5) are back home this week against North Platte Community College at 5:30 p.m. Friday and McCook Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
