LUSK – The Lingle-Fort Laramie girls’ basketball team split weekend action against the Southeast Lady Cyclones and the Niobrara County Lady Tigers on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, On Thursday, Southeast pulled away in the third quarter en route to a 44-23 win over cross-county rival Lingle-Fort Laramie.

The Lady Cyclones ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead into the second.

However, the Lady Doggers weren’t going to go away.

LFL went on an 8-0 run courtesy of a 3-pointers from LFL freshman Skyla Wunder and junior Natalie Speckner to take a 12-10 lead with 5:24 left before halftime.

The run forced Southeast to use a timeout, and the Lady Cyclones held Lingle scoreless until the 5:45 mark in the third quarter.

During the time span, the Lady Cyclone lead grew to 22-12.

Southeast limited the Lady Doggers to only four points in the third quarter and 11 points for the remainder of the game.

The Lady Doggers were led by Speckner with seven points and six rebounds, while Wunder had five points and five steals. Junior Holly Leiseth grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The next day, the Lady Doggers rebounded with a 53-30 win over the Lady Tigers.

“They came back and really brought it tonight,” coach Susan Bartel said. “Last night, they started off with low energy. It was nice to see them come back.”

Lingle scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed in the 23-point victory behind its full-court press.

“We always press so they know they are going to do it,” Bartel said. “It helps bring their energy up and force the turnovers. It’s kind of our signature at this point. They perform better when they are playing tough defense. Defense wins games for us.”

It was until seven minutes into the game when Lusk finally scored its first points of the game.

A 7-4 LFL lead was as close as the Lady Tigers came to seeing the lead the entire game.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Lingle pushed its lead to double digits where it stayed for the remainder of game.

The Lady Doggers outscored NCHS 15-6 in the second quarter and 14-4 in the third.

Senior Baylee Skinner starter led the team with nine points.

“She’s been playing really well. She took last year off and didn’t play,” Bartel said. “This is her first year playing for me, and I’m real proud of where she is at. She is getting her confidence under her.”

Junior Izzy Spears also added nine points off the bench for the Lady Doggers, while Speckner and Wunder added eight points each. Speckner also had six rebounds and seven steals.

The Lady Doggers are now 8-4 on the season. They travel to Guernsey (2-5) on Friday for a 5 p.m. contest.

“We are going to come back next week, and we’ll be practicing some boxing out,” Bartel said. “We still have somethings to work on to refine our game.”
