Lady Doggers hit top five at state track

CASPER – Building on three, top-five finishes in the 100- 200 and 400-meter events from Kaelyn Riley, the Lady Dogger’s track team posted a strong fourth-place finish with 53.66 points over the weekend in the Wyoming State Track and Field Meet here.

Riley scampered to a third-place spot in the 200 with a time of 27.55 seconds, a fourth-place finish in the 400 at 1:03.20 and a final showing of 13.67 seconds, good enough for fifth place in the 100. Riley also anchored the 1,600-meter relay team with Shelby Heilbrun, Jenna Kaufman and Jenny Manus, finishing second in a time of 4:32.26.

Manus, Heilbrun and Kaufman were joined by Cora Frederick for a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay in 11:27.42. In field events, Savannah Mirich was the top finisher for the Lady Doggers with a second-place throw of 34-feet, 9.5 inches.

The Dogger boys edged into sixth place in the team standings, tying with Kaycee and Cokeville at 55 points.

Landen Fuller paced the Doggers with top-five finished in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter dashes. He crossed the line second in the 800 at 1:57.05 ahead of teammate Kelly Peterson, who came in 10th at 2:10.01.

Fuller posted a third-place finish in the 400-meter in 51.70 seconds, claiming the fifth-place spot in the 200-meter at 24.08 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Dogger Ty Mueller crossed the line in fourth place at 12.27-seconds, followed by Fuller in sixth at 12.35.

The other Dogger who showed well in the meet was Cole Shepardson, claiming a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and teaming with Hayden Hill, Cooper Hill and Gaven Niles for third in the 400-meter relay at 48.22-seconds.

Shepardson and Niles returned to the track, teamed with Kelly Peterson and Rhet Greenwald for a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meters relay at 3:48.76. Greenwald also posted a fifth-place in the 110-meter hurdles at 18.33 seconds.

Blazers medal three at 3A

The Blazers only showed three with medal finishes over the weekend, led by a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles for Bryan Lemmon in 15.58 seconds. The 3,200-meter relay team of Aaron Borger, Matthew Garcia, Pake Haun and Cameron Juma earned a trip to the stand with their second-place finish in a time of 8:30.22.

In the field events, Nathanial Woodruff blasted a 49-foot, 4-inch throw, good enough for second place in the event. 

Other top-five finishers for the Blazer boys included the 400-meter relay team of Lemmon, Posten, Parish and Bo Morehouse, finishing in a time of 45.42 seconds for fifth place in the event. Lemmon, Moorehouse, Garcia and Borger combined for a fourth-place sprint in the 1,600-meter medley in 3:47.93.

And Corbin Harris took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 45-feet, 6.75-inches. The Torrington boys finished the meet in sixth place overall with 48 points.

The weekend wasn’t as kind to the girls, with only one athlete breaking the top five mark. Nakalyn Garner captured a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 10-feet even. 

Seven Lady Blazer athletes did make it into the top 10, led by the 3,200-meter relay team of Emily McGaugh, Adia Sherbeyn, Katie Wiford and Sera Glass. The quartet finished in a time of 11:08.11 for seventh in the event. Also posting a seventh-place finish were the 1,600-meter sprint medly team of Hailey Boslau, Katie Wiford, Latosha Wiford and Sherbyn, finishing in a time of 4:44.68.

The Lady Blazers finished the meet at 13th position with 11 points.

Lovercheck paces Cyclones

At 2A, Southeast senior Chase Lovercheck claimed an individual state title in the 2A boys 800-meter run and added a runner-up medal in the 400-meters to lead the Cyclone boys to a three-way tie for eighth place at the 2018 Wyoming State Track and Field Championships in Casper. 

Southeast tied with Niobrara County and Wyoming Indian for eighth place overall with 34 points. Lovell won the boys state title with 134.33 points. 

Lovercheck crossed the tape in one minute, 57.39 seconds to capture gold in the 800-meters, just edging Lovell senior Porter Nichols who came in at 1:58.34. In the 400-meters, Lovercheck came in at 50.51 seconds to finish second to Glenrock’s Tucker Bopp, who crossed in 49.74 seconds. 

Lovercheck also teamed up with Hayden Anderson, Brady Fullmer and Brant Fullmer to earn runner-up honors in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 8:40.64. Southeast’s runner-up time was more than four seconds faster that their previous season best. 

Anderson, Brady Fullmer, Brant Fullmer and Kaden Malm notched a fifth-place finish in the 1600-meter sprint medley with a time of 3:51.32. Again, the Cyclones foursome bested their previous season by nearly six seconds. 

On the girls side, junior Candee Coxbill grabbed a bronze medal in the discus and sophomore Morgan Ekwall finished fourth in the shot put to lead the Lady Cyclones to a 13th place finish overall. 

Coxbill entered the state meet with a season-best toss of 101 feet, 3 inches and bested that toss by more than 14 feet. Coxbill’s throw of 115 feet, 7 inches finished just behind state champion Mikalah Jones of Glenrock (118 feet, 6 inches) and Sundance’s Rigan McInerney (117 feet, 4 inches). 

Ekwall captured her fourth-place medal in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 10.5 inches. 

The Lady Cyclones’ 3200-meter relay squad of Hailey Anderson, Jaiden Hopkins, Kelci Lovercheck and Ellie Schmitt earned bronze with their time of 11:02, while the foursome of Anderson, Lovercheck, Schmitt and Macie Murphy took fifth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:28.21.

Hopkins added a sixth-place finish in the 3200-meter run with a time of 13:12.23 and Anderson garnered a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 200-meters (29.23 seconds) and 400-meters (1:04.09).
