BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School girls’ track and field team dominated the 2023 SEWAC championships last Saturday in Burns.
As a team, the Lady Doggers scored 213 points – 105 points ahead of runner-up Pine Bluffs.
“On the girls’ side, our depth was key to us winning the championship,” coach Mike Lashley said.
The Lady Doggers placed three or four girls in each event with the exception being the 100-meter dash where the team only placed two.
In all, the LFL girls had 13 athletes earn SEWAC All-Conference honors.
The list includes Emma Walker, Maddy Saul, Holly Leiseth, Natalie Speckner, Selina Berlauer, Kenzie Wilkins, Jada Kaufman, Grace Gibson, Hadley Wilkins, Jordynn Speckner, Skyla Wunder, Addie Teeters and Hallie Fuller.
On Saturday, the Lady Doggers picked up seven wins on the day.
Jordynn Speckner won the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 6.08 seconds, while Wilkins swept the distance events. She won the 1,600-meter run in 6:17.72 and won the two-mile race in 14:19.85.
The Lady Doggers swept the relay races. The 4x100 team of Wunder, Jordynn Speckner, Wilkins and Saul won in 52.43 seconds, while the 4x400 team of Walker, Kaufman, Saul and Wilkins won in 4:18.88. The 4x800 team of Berlauer, Fuller, Teeters and Leiseth picked up the win in 11:20.49, and the sprint medley team of Gibson, Wilkins, Natalie Speckner and Walker won in 4:41.20.
In the boys’ division, the Doggers finished second with 141 points, only 44 points behind Burns.
The Lingle boys ended the day with nine SEWAC All-Conference performers, including Remington Bremer, Boyd Oliver, Nolan Spears, Aidan Mattheus, Louden Bremer, Brody Roberts, Sully Wilson, Brayden Posten and Brady Cook.
The Doggers scored five wins at the SEWAC meet.
Willson won the 3,200 in 11:47.46, while Oliver won discus with a throw of 134 feet, 3 inches.
The LFL boys also had three relay wins, including the sprint medley team of Mattheus, Cook, Louden Bremer and Spears in 3:52.33, while the 4x800 team of Remington Bremer, Posten, Roberts and Wilson won in 9:07.55. The 4x400 team of Louden Bremer, Posten, Spears and Roberts capped off the day with a win in 3:34.19.
“We had some very strong performances from both the boys and the girls,” Lashley said. “It was encouraging to see some of our inexperienced athletes step up and score solid points for us. We also tried some kids in new events and put together some new relay combinations, which I think will pay dividends the next couple of weeks.”
Lingle now turns its attention to the 2A East Regional meet which will be held at Torrington’s Wiseman Field on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13.
“We will be seeing the 2A Northeast teams for the first time this season, so it will be interesting to see how we stack up with them,” Lashley said. “We seem to be peaking at the right time. Hopefully, we continue to focus and compete at a high level.”
Action gets underway at noon on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
