Lady Cyclones tough third seed

TORRINGTON – The Southeast Lady Cyclones are entering the 2A East Regional Tournament as the third seed from the 2A Southeast, with their only four conference losses coming against top-ranked teams.

Southeast’s first matchup was against Wright, who posted a 12-9 record during the regular season with a 7-2 mark against 2A Northeast opponents. The Lady Cyclones, whose record is 11-10, and the Lady Panthers have not met this winter. The contest occurred Thursday after press time.

With a win, Southeast advanced to take on the winner between Lusk and Moorcroft, but a loss to the Lady Panthers would put the Lady Cyclones in the lower bracket against the loser between Lusk and Moorcroft. The Lady Tigers enter the tournament with a 19-2 record, the best mark among the 2A East girls. The Lady Wolves are 9-12 on the year, with a 3-6 record in the conference. Southeast is unfamiliar with Moorcroft, but has played Lusk twice this year, falling 51-44 on Jan. 19 and 56-42 on Feb. 9.

Sundance has the top spot from the northeast and is the top team on the other side of the bracket, coming in at 17-3. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Cyclones have not played each other this winter.

Pine Bluffs, Big Horn and Burns round out the teams vying for a 2A East title. The Lady Hornets are a tough team from the 2A Southeast with a 17-5 record, including a win over the Lady Tigers. Big Horn is 12-10, while Burns is 7-15. The two teams occupy the third seed from the northeast and fourth seed from the southeast, respectively.

Southeast is 0-2 against Pine Bluffs, but undefeated against Big Horn and Burns. The Lady Hornets beat the Lady Cyclones on Feb. 2 (42-29) and Feb. 16 (39-37) on a last-second shot. Big Horn fell to Southeast early in 2018, 45-39, while Burns lost to the Lady Cyclones 46-32 on Jan. 23 and 49-41 on Feb. 10.

The Lady Cyclones are in the third seed from the southeast due to two tough teams at the top of the conference. If Southeast can get out of the shadow of Pine Bluffs and Lusk, then the Lady Cyclones could be on their way to punching a ticket for the state tournament.
