TORRINGTON – The Southeast Lady Cyclones had a pair of upsets on their way to the regional championship game, where they lost to Sundance, but still earned the second seed for the state tournament.

Southeast 46, Wright 34

The Lady Cyclones came out swinging in their first game against second-seed Wright, taking an 11-5 lead after the first frame thanks to stingy defense. Wright opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run, but a Morgan Ekwall shot at the halftime horn gave the Lady Cyclones a 19-12 lead heading into the break.

Southeast upped its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Panthers 12-9 in the frame to hold a 31-21 lead heading into the final quarter. The Lady Cyclones had their highest scoring output in the fourth quarter, pouring in 15 points to seal the 46-34 win.

Ellie Schmitt packed her stat line with a team-high 19 points, along with a tie for the team-lead with seven boards. She also had three steals and three assists. Where Schmitt didn’t lead, Hailey Anderson picked up the slack, finishing the night with nine points, seven boards, five steals and five assists.

A big difference in the game came at the charity stripe, where Southeast had 26 free-throw attempts, hitting 14 of them, while Wright went 2-of-5 at the line.

Southeast 43, Lusk 35

Southeast came out hot for the second game in a row, amassing an 11-4 advantage after the first frame over Lusk, the No. 1 seed out of the southeast. Lusk reeled in Southeast just a bit in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Cyclones 10-9, sending the game to halftime with a score of 20-14. Both teams poured in 11 points in the fourth quarter and Southeast outscored Lusk 12-10 in the final frame to secure the second upset win in a row.

Schmitt was again the top scorer for Southeast, racking up 16 points, which she paired with eight rebounds. Kaci Schmick stepped into a top performers role with 13 points on the night.

Anderson recorded a double-double, packing her stat line with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Whitney Foos also had a presence on the boards, coming down with six rebounds.

Again, Southeast had several trips to the free-throw line, where they shot 18-of-30. Lusk went 11-of-19 from the stripe.

Sundance 43, SE 21

The Lady Cyclones did not have the same start against the No. 1 seed from the northeast as they did the previous two games, falling behind 8-1 after the first quarter. Sundance racked up 15 points in the second quarter, while limiting the Lady Cyclones to five points, putting the halftime score at 23-6. Sundance added another 13 points in the third and seven in the fourth to hold of Southeast, who had 15 points throughout the second half.

Anderson was the top scorer for the Lady Cyclones, notching nine points on the night, which she paired with two assists and two steals. Macie Murphy poured in five points and came down with four rebounds, both of which were second on the team. Schmitt paced Southeast with five rebounds.

Unlike the previous two games, Southeast made it to the free-throw line for only six shots, hitting three of them, while Sundance went 4-of-10 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Cyclones upped their record to 13-11 on the year. With the second-place finish at the regional tournament, Southeast is now the No. 2 seed from the east heading into the 2A State Tournament in Casper this weekend. The Lady Cyclones’ first contest comes on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Rocky Mountain at Casper College.
