Lady Cyclones pick up another win; boys make a splash

PINE BLUFFS – Seniors Austin Short, Wyatt Campbell and Dawson Mullock continue to lead the Southeast Boys track team. After great showings throughout the season the duo of Short and Campbell continued to impress at the Kendra Roeder Invitational.

However, those weren’t the only top placers from the boys as two relays took home some hardware along with a third-place finish from Kanon Tippetts in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 23.16 seconds. Short and Campbell did the same events on the day with Campbell taking home gold in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while Short took third in those events. They both ran in the 4x100m relay which took home first place and they also competed in the 4x400m relay, finishing second.

While the Southeast boys haven’t won a lot this season, they still have high hopes to take home some hardware at the state meets hoping to have many of the points come from the senior trio.

The girls on Friday had another amazing showing, this one however came down to the last race as to which team would win the meet and which would take second in the race.

As the track meet wound down, the only girls’ teams still at the met when the running of the 4x400 relay began were the teams in first and second. With a slim half a point lead the Lady Hornets had to win the race in order to win their home track meet. However, the Southeast girls relay has been on a tear this season and didn’t look to let up. And they didn’t. They won the race by 26 seconds to take home the first-place prize and put another mark on an almost undefeated season. However, that one loss came as many of the athletes were gone for district music so can you really count it?

On the day, the girls had many top finishers along with top eight finishes from many girls. In the 400 meters, they took home the top two spots with freshmen Kaycee Kosmicki and Macy Tremain. Sophomore Angie Logsdon earned fourth in the 100-meter hurdles along with taking gold in what seems to be her event, the pole vault.

Junior Kylee Llewellyn was third in triple jump and junior Sasha Haines was fourth in the 100-meter dash. Taylor Hansen had a good day as she won the 300-meter hurdles and was a close second in the 100 hurdles. The girls continued with good runs from their relays as the team of freshman Kennedi Blevins, Haines, Hansen and Tremain took third in the 4x100 relay. Logsdon, Tremian, Blevins and Haines also took home the top spot in the 4x400 relay as mentioned before and a team of consisting of Kylee Llewellyn, freshman Keana Llewellyn, Taylor Tregemba and Anna Hartman earned second in the 4x800 relay.

For the girl throwers, it was a spectacular day. The Lady Cyclones took home the top three spots in discus with throws from junior Harper Boche (No. 1), senior Shelby Ekwall (No. 2) and freshman Hadley Leithead (No. 3). The girls also took the top two spots in shot put with Ekwall winning gold and Boche taking second.

The Southeast girls will look to continue to dominate this season and this week as the attend a meet at home in Torrington on Friday. The boys will hope to have top places from the seniors and a few surprising finishes from the underclassmen and relays.
