Lady Cyclones 4-1 at Winter Classic

BURNS – The Southeast High School girls’ basketball team picked up four wins over the weekend at the Burns Winter Classic.

The defending Class 1A state champions opened the weekend with a 57-3 home conference win over the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings.

Southeast led 37-0 at halftime, scoring 25 points in the first quarter. The lone points for the visitors came in the third quarter.

The Lady Cyclones added 18 more points in the third and two in the fourth.

Senior Shelby Ekwall led the team with 13 points, while senior Brenna Herring had 12.

A total of eight Lady Cyclones scored at least two points in the victory.

The next day, Southeast opened its two games against the Class 3A Moorcroft Lady Wolves.

Southeast came away with a 51-34 win.

Moorcroft kept things close for one quarter. The Lady Wolves cut the Lady Cyclone lead to 15-14 in the first minute of the second quarter. It was the only points of the frame for Moorcroft.

Southeast scored nine straight points heading into halftime, leading 24-14.

The Lady Cyclone lead never dropped back below single digits for the remainder of the game.

Herring led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Anerson had 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kealy Carson tossed in seven points to go along with six assists and two steals.

Later in the afternoon, Southeast fell to Douglas 57-33.

The Lady Cyclones trailed 22-16 at half before pulled away in the second half.

Anderson led the team with seven points, while Ekwall added six points, six rebounds and four assists.

On Saturday, Southeast defeated Newcastle 57-56 in double overtime.

Junior Baylie Booth sealed the deal for the Lady Cyclones with a game-winner.

Herring led the team with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Anderson had 13 points and Ekwall 12. Herring and Carson had three steals each, while Herring had six assists.

In the final game of the weekend, Southeast defeated Burns 44-33.

The Lady Cyclones got off to a quick start, leading 12-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Southeast extended the lead to 28-10 by halftime.

Booth led the team in scoring with 10, while Ekwall and Herring had nine each. Anderson had eight and Carson seven. Herring grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Booth had three assists. Carson dished out four assists.

The Lady Cyclones (4-1) will play another four games in two days this weekend as part of the Lingle-Fort Laramie Dogger Basketball Classic.

On Friday, they will face Encampment at 10 a.m. and Kaycee on 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Cyclones will face Rock River at 9 a.m. and Hulett at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played in Yoder.
