LUSK – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Lady Doggers placed in 12 events, while the Dogger boys had six placing efforts Saturday at the Dennis Zowada Invitational in Lusk, with the girls taking sixth and boys falling to eighth.

“Although our team scores may not reflect it, we actually got quite a bit accomplished at Lusk,” coach Mike Lashley said. “We got our boys 4x100 relay prequalified for state and both the boys and girls sprint medley teams broke school records. We saw improvement in many areas and are hoping that it carries over to SEWAC this week.”

Shelby Heilbrun, Kaylan Maez, Kaelyn Riley and Jenna Kaufman combined for the best finish for the Lady Doggers, clocking a time of 4:47.44 in the 1600-meter sprint medley to take first, breaking L-FL’s school record set in 1997. In the other relays, Kaufman, Maez and Heilbrun were joined by Jenny Manus for the 3200-meter relay, finishing second with a time of 12:00.54. Manus and Heilbrun linked up with Jordyn Gaspers and Kalli Nichol for the 400-meter relay, taking sixth with a time of 59.25 seconds.

Also on the track, Cora Frederick snagged a second-place finish in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:36.24, followed closely by Manus, who took third with a time of 6:39.77.

Maez had a solid day in the hurdles. In the 300-meter event, she snagged third with a time of 56.53 seconds, paired with a fifth-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 18.97 seconds.

Moving to the field events, Gaspers placed in three events. She cleared 4 feet, 6 inches in the high to take sixth. A jump of 13 feet, 4.5 inches earned her sixth in the long jump and she snagged seventh in the triple jump with a 28-foot, 6-inch effort.

Heilbrun joined Gaspers in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches to take fifth. Savannah Mirich rounded out the field placers, snagging seventh in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet.

The Lady Doggers racked up 58 points in the team standings to finish sixth, edging out Southeast’s 54 points. Pine Bluffs won the girls team title with 127 points, followed by Burns (118.5) and Lusk (106).

Boys

Landen Fuller had the best finish for the Doggers, grabbing the gold in the 100 with a time of 12.08 seconds. Joining him in track events, Gaven Niles took seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:23.55. Rhett Greenwald competed in the 110-meter hurdles, posting the sixth-best time (19.06) in the prelims, but he did not finish in the finals.

Niles and Fuller were joined by Hayden Hill and Cole Shepardson for the 1600-meter sprint medley, finishing second with a time of 3:49.76 and breaking the old school record set in 1977. Hill, Niles and Shepardson linked up with Cooper Hill for the 400-meter relay, taking second with a time of 47.80 seconds.

Cooper Hill was the lone Dogger to place in a field event, snagging seventh in the long jump with a 17-foot, 8.5-inch effort.

L-FL’s boys snagged an eighth-place finish with 30 points, tying Guernsey-Sunrise for the slot. Gordon-Rushville took the top spot with 122.5 points. Lusk, with 113.5 points, and Glenrock, with 103.5 points, rounded out the top-three teams.

Wyoming Track Classic

Fuller had a stellar performance at the Wyoming Track Classic on Friday in Casper. The classic was invite-only, with only the top performances across the state, regardless of class, allowed to compete.

Fuller was L-FL’s lone competitor in Casper and he made the most of it, clocking a time of 1:57.94 in the 800 to earn second. His time is a new school record for L-FL.

“Landen’s 800 at the Wyoming Track Classic was quite the race. He ran probably the best tactical race of his career,” Lashley said. “We have been focusing more on speed training with him and you could definitely see the difference. He looked must stronger with his kick down the home stretch. He is gaining more and more confidence when he races. It will be fun to watch him compete the next few weeks.”

Fuller earned eight team points for his efforts, putting the Doggers 22nd. Kelly Walsh won the boys team title with 63 points, with Natrona County (47) and Pine Bluffs (34.5) rounding out the top-three.
