Inmates produce cemetery wreaths for Memorial Day observance

Posted

TORRINGTON – Every Memorial Day, Valley View Cemetery here is covered in red, white, and blue.

Continuing that tradition this year, more than 1,000 graves will be adorned with “evergreen” wreaths, a symbol of those who served and a reminder of their undying memory and heroism.

Behind the scenes, Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution inmates keep the tradition alive, making the poppies and then assembling about 1,200 wreaths for the solemn occasion.

Five inmates work intensely removing last year’s poppies and strategically placing new poppies (approximately 9,000) on the wreaths. This year, inmates James Koester, Mack Thomas, Leland Brown and Thomas Miller worked diligently in preparation for Memorial Day.

This is the eighth year the American Legion Auxiliary has partnered with the Recreation Manager, Earl Umbenhower to complete this project. And the inmates say they appreciate the opportunity to serve behind the scenes and do something positive for the public.

The local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Torrington will host their annual Memorial Day observance at Valley View Cemetery starting at 10 a.m. Monday. The cemetery is located at East 30th Avenue and East B Street.
