Humphrey brings wealth of experience to VP position

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College’s new Vice President for Academic Services is fueled by a passion for education that’s been burning for more than 50 years.
Roger Humphrey was appointed to the position at the December 2017 EWC Board of Trustees meeting, following a five-month stint as interim vice president.
“I loved school when I was a kid,” Humphrey said. “I’ve been in school one way or the other since 1966 … I have a passion for education. It opens doors, it provides students … an opportunity to better themselves and to better their lives. It’s rewarding to watch students as they progress, whether in my experience in the k-12 world or here, where they complete a program, a degree, a certificate. Down the road, hopefully they become a productive member of society – you hope you made an impact in their lives.”
Humphrey spent the past 34 years in various positions in the public-school systems, serving as a classroom teacher, building principal and central office administrator.
Specifically, he worked as the assistant superintendent for curriculum, assessment and professional development with Campbell County School District in Gillette; director of Title I in Gillette; assistant superintendent in Goshen County; elementary principal at Baggs Elementary in Cheyenne; and elementary principal in Pine Bluffs.
Humphrey joined EWC in 2015 as an education instructor. He then became the Associate Vice President for Academic Services and Outreach with the retirement of Mike Durfee.

“The majority of my previous position dealt with our concurrent and dual enrollment courses, providing services through our whole service area – not only on campus … also with our Douglas campus,” Humphrey said. “It included lot of work with online or students taking courses in our outreach area and secondary and postsecondary students. I worked with our academic services, in terms of scheduling and courses and so forth. This role, for the most part, really expands this position. Primarily, it oversees everything under that academic services umbrella.”
Humphrey is responsible for organizing and coordinating EWC’s accreditation process, college data analysis and reporting, and monitoring and supervising the academic programs.
“Our academic services provide a large percentage of the work here at the college,” Humphrey said. “Our area is fairly broad and encompassing.”
In addition to his VP position, Humphrey also continues to advise students and teaches an online course. He said he believes one of EWC’s strength is its ability to provide one-on-one time with students.
“You’re not just a name on a name badge,” he said. “We have a lot of people who teach a course here and there. I like that – it gives me a direct connection to students. Sometimes the further you get up the administrative chain, the further you get from the (students).”
In the future, Humphrey hopes to grow existing programs and increase enrollment.
“We want to be able to provide new programs to meet new needs. That never ends,” he said. “A lot of our driving force is to make sure we maintain a high quality program and product, but also be open to grow and enhance existing programs.
“I’m really looking forward to expanding our enrollment in our service area,” Humphrey continued. “How can we attract students throughout the service area? One of our goals is to increase the number of post-secondary, part-time students in our outreach area.”
While Humphrey admits he is busy, his lifelong love for education keeps him moving forward.
“It’s a honor and privilege to work with the faculty, staff and students here,” he said. “We have a great institution, and I feel very fortunate.”
