Hawk Springs hamburger fry

HAWK SPRINGS – There were hamburgers and hotdogs back on the grill at the Hawk Springs Community Building Associations (HSCBA) annual Hamburger fry on Wednesday, July 14.

This was the second hamburger fry of the summer held by the HSCBA after having to cancel all three of their events last year due to the pandemic.

HSCBA Treasurer-Secretary Venita Cochran said they had approximately 150 guests attend the Hamburger Fry in June, and they expected a similar number of people would be in attendance for the July date.

All the proceeds raised during the Hamburger Fry go towards paying the bills for the HSCBA and ensuring they have a place for people in the Hawk Springs community to go and enjoy time together.

Cochran said people really missed the Hamburger Fry’s last year and that it’s a really important event for the people in the community. It’s a way to get them all together in the same place and enjoy each other’s company and to laugh and tell stories.

People can rent out the HSCB for all types of different events. They host weddings, baby showers, family reunions and other various events.

While the HSCBA wasn’t able to host their Hamburger Fry events last year due to the pandemic, Cochran said they received donations from people in the community to help keep the doors open and pay the bills.

“We asked the public for help [last year] and they helped us a lot,” Cochran said. “We were able to weather the storm that year and without that, we would’ve had to close the doors.”

The fee to get a plate is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-11, children under the age of six get in for free. With your meal, you will receive a hamburger or hotdog, a drink of your choice, various sides and a dessert offered by the ladies of the Yoder and Hawk Springs communities.

“The salads and desserts are donated by the women of Hawk Springs and some of the women from the Yoder community,” Cochran said. “They are the backbone of this whole thing. These women bring their food to help support this community.”

The HSCBA will be hosting one final Hamburger Fry later in August. If you want to enjoy good food with good people, make sure to head out to the HSCB for the next Hamburger Fry event.
