Ball Club Financed: The committee selected to solicit finances for the Torrington base ball team are meeting with a very hearty response. Already slightly over $2,200 have been raised and there are still a few to see. Evidently the people of Torrington are determined to have a good base ball team and are willing to back it up with the real coin. The fair grounds will be used as in former years as the grand stand there is ample to seat about any crowd that would attend.

Thirty Five Thousand Dollar Jewelry Theft: Jewelrly valued at approximately thirty-five thousand dollars was stolen some time between midnight and four o’clock Monday morning from Clyde Smith’s store. The jewelry was the property of the Bryn-Duff Jewelry Co., of Omaha, and was packed in two trunks and a carrying case and was in charge of J. W. Washburn, their traveling salesman.

Making Preliminary Survey Of The Kelly Land: A preliminary survey of the half-section Kelly farm adjoining the town on the north is being made this week to determine how it shall be divided into lots and small tracts. Definite plans have not been fully worked out but it is the general idea at the present time to divide the irrigated part of the land into five acre tracts and to lay the terrace into residence lots.

Accident Last Friday Leads to Heavy Fine: An accident which occurred last Friday about 7 o’clock in the evening on the first curve west of the experiment farm led to heavy fines in justice court here, according to Patrolman Park C. Carmine. Alexander, Dave and Reuben Strauss of Mitchell were each fined $50 and costs by Judge R. O. Gamble after being charged with driving an automobile in a careless and negligent manner and being under the influence of intoxicating liquor. Reuben, driver of the car, drew an additional $30 fine.

DeBolt Is Awarded Citation for Effort In Red Cross Drive: H.A. DeBolt this week received a citation from national Red Cross headquarters for his services as 1945 War Fund chairman. The certificate, which can be viewed in the Edelman drug display window, has been awarded to DeBolt in grateful recognition of outstanding loyalty, patriotism and public spirit.

Better Homes Store to Open Here Saturday: Rural residents and people of Torrington generally will be pleased to learn that the Better Homes store will open for business Saturday, April 7. The new business will be located at 2018 Main Street in the former location of the Deluxe cleaners, and will be managed by Dick Kluherz. Every lady registering on the opening day will receive a gift with the compliments of the management.

April 6, 1970

Goshen 4-H’ers Receive UP Scholarship Awards: Union Pacific Railroad has approved the selection of 4-H’ers in Laramie, Albany, Goshen and Lincoln counties to receive $200 scholarships for 1970-71. Each year Union Pacific awards these scholarship to 4-H’ers in selected counties served by the railroad. To be in either home economics or agriculture in a land grant college situation in one of the 11 states served by UP.

Local woman heads 2-state convention: Over eighty women are expected for the 10state quadrennial Royal Neighbors Convention to be held in Torrington Thursday through Saturday. State Oracle Bea Munroe of Torrington will head the state convention which includes Utah and Wyoming. The convention will be held at the Odd Fellows Temple beginning with a social hour at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Council Approves 3 Members to City Planning Commission: The Torrington City Council approved the recommendation of the City Planning Commission for three new members to its group. The new members will fill the unexpired terms of Mrs. Janet Hogg, Rev. Howard Osborne and Walter Johnson. Appointed to the commission were Mrs. May Kuxhausen, Mrs. Alva Rogers and Rev. Elmer Jesse.

EWC employees can expect 2.5 percent pay rise: Employees of Wyoming’s seven community colleges can expect a bigger paycheck in the next school yard even though the state Legislature I’d not provide additional funding. The Wyoming Community College Commission on Friday approved a plan to dedicate a nearly $1.2 million pool to boosting salaries. About one-third of the money will come fro part of the $60 a year tuition increase, another is the result of a lawsuit settlement at one college and the rest will come from budget carryover and leftover money.

Town applies for grant to fix houses: No, Tim Allen is not coming to town, but home improvement is. The Torrington town council has established a committee to address housing needs in the area. Mayor Ed Jolovich said the are the committee has identified with the greatest need is to refurbish some of the houses in the town that are being vacated.

THS students one step from nationals: A Torrington High School cross-examinations debate team and a senior Trailblazer humorist were just one step away from receiving invitations to the national forensics tournament. Ryan McCreery and Lisa Hinkley teamsed up to take fourth place out of 30 teachs in the regional tournament in Cheyenne over the weekend, but will still be an alternate team for the Nationals. For Greg Collins, who was in the humor category, his loss in the finals will not be able to be made up for in 1996, as the senior will graduate this May. Collins finished fifth out of 60 participants in humor.
