LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Torrington Wrestling Club had four wrestlers compete at the USA Western Regionals in Las Vegas toward the end of April, combining to place in the top-four five time.

Ty Albaugh, Kozad Porter, Grant Logsdon and Jacob Polkowske all represented Goshen County in the Freestyle, Greco and Folkstyle categories. Albaugh finished first in Greco, third in Folkstyle and fourth in Freestyle, while Porter picked up a fourth-place finish in both Freestyle and Greco.

Greco

Albaugh’s best finish of the weekend came at the intermediate 63 division in Greco, where he snagged first. After a first-round bye, he went on to pin both Marcus Killgore (Arizona) and Erik Carlile (Utah) in the first period. In the first-place match, Albaugh got the better of Oregon’s Ryland Walters in a 10-0 technical fall.

At intermediate 67, Porter finished fourth with a 2-2 record. He had an opening round bye, before starting the action off with a pin over David Medina (California). In the semis, Porter was bested in a 14-4 technical fall against Utah’s Riker O’Hearon. Porter won his first match in the lower bracket by a 10-0 technical fall over Dallin Chesley (Idaho), before falling to fellow Wyoming wrestler Noah Bull in the third-place match by a 16-5 technical fall.

Polkowske also snagged two wins in the Greco competition at junior 160. He started with a pin at the 3:00-mark against Washington’s Garrett Wilson, before falling in a 10-0 technical fall against Payton Hume (Montana). Polkowske found himself on the other end of a 10-0 tech, winning against Washington’s Austin Wood. The Blazers’ Greco action came to an end in the form of an 11-0 technical fall against California’s Louis Rojas.

Logsdon (schoolboy 87) started his Greco tournament with a bye, followed by a pin in 20 seconds against Cohen Schleich (Oregon). Logsdon suffered two straight losses, a 10-0 technical fall against Trason Oehme (South Dakota) and a pin against Alaska’s Benjamin Pope, to end his time on the mat.

Folkstyle

Albaugh (intermediate 57-62) started off his Folkstyle competition with a win by pin in the first period against Washington’s Bobby Rothenberger. Albaugh kept the winning coming with another pin over Avery Navarro (Arizona), before being pinned at the 2:35-mark against Carlile (Utah).

Albaugh dropped to the consolation semi-finals, where he pinned Oregon’s Walters in the first period. Albaugh replicated his earlier results against Navarro, again pinning him at the 2:00-mark to capture third.

Porter (intermediate 60-66) finished his Folkstyle rounds with a 2-2 record, starting with pins over Manuel Maes (New Mexico) and Evan Roedel (Nevada), both in the first period. In the semi-final, Porter lost in a 6-0 decision to Aidan Godley (Oregon), followed by a 9-5 decision loss against Utah’s O’Hearon.

Logsdon (schoolboy 79-85) started the competition with a loss via pin against Treygen Morin (Idaho), before rebounding with a pin over Washington’s Dylan McEwen-Allenbach at the 1:14-mark. Fellow Cowboy state wrestler Zachary Covolo ended Logsdon’s weekend in Folkstyle by pinning him in the first.

Polkowske (men 151-159) started the Folkstyle competition with a loss by pin against Alaska’s Levi Hopkins. After a bye in the lower bracket, the Blazer bested Brandon Poe (Washington) in an 8-1 decision. Lorenzo Gonzalez (Washington) bested Polkowske in a 1-0 decision, ending his weekend in Folkstyle.

Freestyle

Albaugh, at intermediate 63, was one of two locals to finish fourth in Freestyle. He started with a 14-4 technical fall win over Arizona’s Killgore. Albaugh then lost by a 10-0 technical fall against Evan Roedel (Neveda), dropping to the lower bracket, where he rattled off three wins, beating Canada’s Jerin Coles (10-0), Colorado’s Josiah Boyden (fall 0:17) and Arizona’s Navarro (fall 0:56). In the third-place match, Albaugh was bested in a close 24-22 decision to Oregon’s Walters.

Porter, at intermediate 67, was another local to snag fourth in Freestyle. After an opening round bye, Porter bested Idaho’s Chesley in a 10-0 technical fall, before falling in a 12-2 technical fall against Nevada’s Brenden Jorden Agcaoili.

In the lower bracket, Porter rattled off three-straight wins, all by technical fall, besting Wyoming’s Tyler Wenzel (16-6), Arizona’s Dallas Brooks (12-2) and Arizona’s Carmine Cruz (13-3). Porter found himself on the wrong end of a 10-0 technical fall in the third-place rematch against Agcaoili.

Logsdon (schoolboy 87) started the action with a bye, before falling by pin against both Tyler Kaahanui (Nevada) and Van Poniewaz (Nevada).

At junior 160, Polkowske started the same way as Logsdon, with a bye. In the second round, Polkowske lost in a 10-0 technical fall against Utah’s Koby Johnson. After another bye in the lower bracket, Polkowske was pinned by California’s Tyee Ducharme.
